Sam Schmid, an Arizona college student believed to be brain dead and poised to be an organ donor, miraculously recovered just hours before doctors were considering taking him off life support. Schmid, a junior and business major at the University of Arizona, was critically wounded in an Oct. 19 five-car accident in Tucson.
The 21-year-old's brain injuries were so severe that the local hospital could not treat him. He was airlifted to the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Phoenix, where specialists performed surgery for a life-threatening aneurysm.
As hospital officials began palliative care and broached the subject of organ donation with his family, Schmid began to respond, holding up two fingers on command. Today he is walking with the aid of a walker, and his speech, although slow, has improved.
Doctors say he will likely have a complete recovery. He even hopes to get a day pass from the hospital to celebrate the holidays with his large extended family.

Blessings on him and his family.
Amen to that. Miracles happen.
When it’s your time, it’s your time.
And when it not, it’s not.
If anything, the more we have learned that doctors and current medical “science” know less and less about comatose patients, and persistent vegetative state patients.
That many have consciousness but can’t move. Not saying this guy did but there are a lot of cases where this occurs.
More reason not to give up on people and just look at them as a bag of organs to harvest.
My 29 year old first cousin died in front of his children from a brain anyerism. Just dropped in front of them. He was on life support and the decision was made to discontinue it. My grandmother never recovered from that- she was there- and sucumbed to cancer not long after.
Knowing of this story makes me happy for this family but sad for mine. What if...
You are so right. What is the time limit to be in coma... No one knows. I have told my family that if I am ever in a coma go on the assumption I can hear everything said so all be careful what you say and read me God’s word and play praise music all the time; tell me all good and funny family haps. (I should add to let me know Immediately if for some reason Obama is not president any longer)
You know, that’s not a bad idea.
I think every conservative (known by relatives) should just try and tell their relatives Obama is no longer in office, just to see if it might be a trigger to snap them out of their comatose state.
