Morning Joe: Portman Predicted As Romney VP Pick
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 12/30/2011 5:23:30 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

With not one Republican primary vote cast yet, we're getting way ahead of ourselves by speculating about whom Mitt Romney might pick as his vice-presidential running mate. But Willie Geist did invite Politico's Mike Allen to make his "bold predictions" for 2012. And Allen delivered, prognosticating that Romney would pick Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman as his ticket-mate.

Mark Halperin strongly seconded Allen's assertion.

Susana Martinez? I like that idea!

Romney is a touch boring, Portan is really boring. Santorum is a little boring but worse, he looks like he could be Romney’s Son! [Sorry about that Rick, but you do look like Romneys’ son]

Out of this bunch, hopefully Santorum makes it to Super Tuesday.

“If Mittens is the nominee I predict Joe Biden will be VP 01/20/2013”

Winner!

I have held my nose to vote for most candidates for the past 40 years... I think the exception was for voting for Reagan in 1984(I did not vote in 1980...I bought the media BS about Reagan but of course refused to vote for Carter....Reagan turned me into a dyed in the wool conservative.).

I held my nose to vote for both Bushes, McCain, and Dole. I had no choice.

Pragmatic voting and intellectual honnesty are not mutually inclusive.

On the idea that Romney can simply assume he, being the Republican nominee, will carry the base, such a selection makes sense. Portman would help in Ohio, and that state could be the pivotal state of the election. Plus, it could help in the Senate race in that state. But, no, Romney cannot make that assumption. He would have to secure the base. This means a Protestant and it means somebody recognized to be a conservative. One person who fits the bill is Tennessee Congressman (her choice) Marsha Blackburn. Besides, Portman has a similar, corporate image. A numbers guy. And, there’s no guarantee we’d win a special election to replace him were he elected Vice President.

Well, that’s one reason she might be picked, eh? She is a good speaker, but a problem for her as a southerner is that she may not help in states like Ohio.

I am sure it will be Rubio so we will be forced into a third party since neither major ticket will be eligible.

Bump.

If we actually get stuck with O’Romney, we’d probably be better off with Natalie Portman as his running mate...

My money’s on Gov. McDonnell. Rubio and Martinez have promise, but need more executive experience.

“Pragmatic voting and intellectual honnesty are not mutually

Voting isn’t what’s at issue. Its the chicken little pronouncements against Romney from the same folks who you and I both know will be cheer leading him the most if he wins the nomination. Either he’s that terrible (which he is) in which case voting for him in the general election is just as bad as voting for Odumbo OR he isn’t in which case the intemperate remarks needs to be toned down so as not to turn away voters.

That would be interesting. I believe Lt. Gov. Taylor is from the Akron area, its always nice to see my hometown get some recognition for something positive.

Yes. Akron area. Greene Township.

Not a chance. That ticket would be too ¨white bread.¨ Now you might not like the observation but that is the political reality. Anyway, I think we all know who the OBVIOUS choice for VP will be.

Yeah, a Politico writer is just trying to ¨help¨ the Repùblicans with his suggestion. More like he is trying to undermine them so take any such suggestion with a huge grain of salt.

Then I will work against Romney/Portman.

Rob Portman was my congressman and had a good conservative record. I would caution him against getting entangled in the liberal camp. But, power does strange things to people.

Marco Rubio has made it VERY clear that he would not accept. Some might change their minds....but I honestly don’t think Rubio will.

Almost all prospective candidates say that but in the end, they almost always accept the post. This time the Republican nominee would say something to Rubio like, ¨Listen, Marco. I need you on the ticket. More importantly the country needs you. Your acceptance of the VP spot could be all that stands in the way of 4 more years of Socialism that this country couldn´t survive.¨

So look for VP candidate Marco Rubio...the OBVIOUS choice.

I guess it was inevitable that the Know Nothing faction would weigh in.

Portman is my senator and he is a good one - but he is not VP material - he is the quiet brainy type.

VPs need to be a bulldog - like Cheney - the best VP ever.

And seriously didn’t morning joe go for Huntsman - they always go for milktoast conservatives.
