Carbs, protein, and fat do not affect the body the same way. I have never been able to lose weight using the calories in calories out method. I was even in the hospital for a few days and gained weight on their calorie-counted diet. The doc was in denial about the whole thing and got pissed when I told him the only way I lose weight is on a low-GI diet. I also only lose weight by lifting weights. Cardio does nothing to the scales. But when I take in a lot of sugar (Christmas!) my body is a mess and it takes at least a weak to get back on track and feel decent again.

For 90 percent of the people, that’s where you start. If you’ve cut your calorie intake by a sufficient amount and are exercising reasonably and not making progress, then you gotta look at what works for you.
But the cutting of calories is the starting point.
