Police kill dog after it attacked its owner

SIERRA VISTA — Officers were forced to shoot and kill an aggressive dog in an apartment in Sierra Vista after it attacked its owner.

The dog, thought to be a German Shepherd and Chow mix, bit its owner in her arm and head before police were contacted at 8:25 p.m. on Thursday and responded to Vista de la Sierra Apartments, 1555 Busby Drive, said Tracy Grady, public information officer for the Sierra Vista Police Department.

“When the officers responded to the apartment, they found the victim still inside the apartment with the dog,” Grady said.

The first officer on scene, Detective Nick Lamay, managed to subdue the dog.

As the dog continued to try and bite the detective, Lamay instructed nearby residents to help remove the victim from the apartment and to close the door behind them to prevent the dog from escaping, Grady said.

A second officer soon arrived at the apartment, and, as the dog continued to bite at the officer and show other aggressive behavior, the decision was made to shoot and kill the animal.

The same dog was involved in a similar incident earlier this year when, in August, it was quarantined for 10 days after it bit its male owner in the face, Grady said.

At that time, and up through the incident on Thursday, the dog was confirmed to have been up to date on all inoculations, she said.

The female owner injured on Thursday was treated at the scene for her injuries but refused transportation to the hospital, Grady said.

In cases where the police are investigating a mysterious man trespassing in someone's backyard, Step One seems to be to shoot the homeowner's pet dog.

In this case, where the police are expected to deal with a violent dog, the Steps are:

1) subdue the dog
2) Ask neighbors to help remove the homeowner from the scene.
3) Wait for backup.
4) Discuss situation with backup.
5) Decide to shoot the dog.
6) Shoot the dog.

Really highlights the other cases where the cops see a dog, draw and fire.

The dog may have had encephalitis - post distemper vaccine.

Our great dane was diagnosed with encephalitis although he had all his shots (distemper, rabies etc.,) He showed no signs of vicious behavior - but seizures, uneven gait and loss of motor function.

I had a chow lab mix. Good guard dog. Especially around kids. If kids came over to play with my kids that dog wouldn’t let their parents, if he didn’t know them, near any kids.

Yup... It would be pretty rare for a German Shepard to turn on its owner. But A chow can snap like a pit bull. Not as persistent and deadly as a pit bull though. If this had been a pit bull then the lady would be in the morgue right now.

If I had an animal that intentionally did something like that, there would not be a similar incident later unless the animal's ghost did it.

Yep, dog should have been gone that day. I would not have tolerated that. I have no problem with this dog shooting.

The police did the right thing here.

Any dog that will turn on even its owner cannot be trusted. It would have just been a matter of time until it killed someone.

If a non-police officer shot the dog, the judge would calling killing an officer. The police today don’t have the training to use the dogs correctly. Best scrap the program until they get it right..

I’ve only been bitten three times in my life. One time was more of a snap instead of a bite. All three times were by German Shepards. Two of them were mine. One was a pup and bit me when he was three months old. All I did was walk behind him and his tail brushed my leg. He whipped around and grabbed my leg. He went back to the breeder ASAP. The other one was a two year old male that my husband got from a friend. He snapped at me, my husband, and my daughter. We gave him back. The third one belonged to a neighbor. I was walking and he ran from his yard to the road to bite me. I swatted him with my walking stick just as the owner called him back to the yard. I didn’t make a fuss about it because I love dogs but he was fenced after that.

No more GSD’s for us. They are the only dog I’m afraid of.

“The woman was treated at the scene”........ I hope the wound was cleaned properly. Infection is assured if it wasn’t.
