ANAHEIM (KNX 1070) A member of an employees group is asking for a criminal investigation in the wake of a controversial directive asking city employees to delete potentially embarrassing emails.
Last week, employees of the Planning Department were told to clean out old messages and files that might be unflattering to city leaders or developers.

The company I worked for until recently deletes all emails after thirty days. The reason was the suit against Microsoft where there were so many ill-considered statements by employees that MS was terribly embarrassed. I think they lost that suit.
The issue is that people write things, which are taken out of context, or poorly considered from the legal standpoint. Given enough of these badly worded missives a lawyer or reporter can create any picture they want.
Courts have held that the owner of the email system can make the rules. If the government in question owns and controls the email system all they have to do is set up an automatic dump. Also, my previous company made it impossible to forward or copy some emails.
Whoever asked this needs to have their head examined. They should have just taken the legally tested auto deletion route.
