Paula Deen the queen of high-calorie, Southern cooking is about to come clean and confess that she cant eat her own dishes anymore because she has diabetes.
The Georgia-born chef a Food Network star who has written five best-selling cookbooks has been trying to keep her condition a secret, even after the National Enquirer reported in April that she has Type 2 diabetes, which is often associated with fatty foods and obesity.
Sources say Deen, 64, who never addressed the diabetes question, has worked out a multimillion-dollar deal to be the spokeswoman for a pharmaceutical company and endorse the drug she is taking.

Body fat doesn’t cause diabetes, body fat is a SYMPTOM of diabetes.
Gary Taubes in his book “Why We Get Fat” explains the process in a way just about anyone can understand.
1) Your body starts to maintain too much insulin in the blood (there are a number of reasons for this, including diet, but this is where it starts). Because there is too much insulin in your blood your body starts storing food as fat instead of burning it (one of insulin’s jobs is to push fat into the fat cells). You also quit burning body fat (one of insulin’s other jobs is to prevent you from burning body fat—there’s a good reason for this, but the point to remember from this is that when there is excess insulin in the blood your body is incapable of releasing fat from the fat cells into the bloodstream to be burned).
2) Because of the excess insulin in the blood, your cells increase their resistance to insulin.
3) Because your cells start to become insulin resistant, your pancreas starts to produce MORE insulin in attempt to over come the cell’s insulin resistance. The excess insulin in your blood causes you to store more food as fat instead of burning it, and prevents you from burning the fat already stored in your fat cells (you get fatter).
4) Steps 2 & 3 repeat over and over again in a race between the cells (which become more and more insulin resistant) and your pancreas (which pumps ever increasing levels of insulin in your blood in an attempt to overcomes the cells resistance).
5) Eventually, the pancreas becomes so overworked that it fails, and starts to lose the ability to produce insulin.
I recommend you get Taubes book (while not a book specifically about diabetes, it explains the process that causes it, and the root causes of why the excess insulin is produced in the first place), then I recommend you find a doctor that has read a medical book published after the ‘70s.
The ignorance is shocking.
Carbs are the killers. You need insulin for the cells to burn glucose.
Fats and proteins do not require insulin for the body to use them as fuel.
My Type 1 diabetic sun can eat cubes of butter all day long and not bolus a single unit of insulin to deal with it. Two double-stuff oreo cookies, however, require 1.5 units (21 grams of carbs).
Deen is suffering from insulin resistance, which is the body’s rejection of the insulin it produces.
Weight loss CAN cure Type 2 in many cases, but not in all cases. Met a rock hard 45 year old women, 118 lbs, and has Type 2.
The state of research on diabetes is pathetic. I was at a seminar on Type 1 in Seattle and asked whether anyone had actually confirmed that the Islet of Langerhorn cells in the pancreas had actual died.
The answer was, across almost 70 years of research on the topic - “No.”
Hasn’t stopped hospitals from explaining to patients that their Islet cells have died, causing a ‘sundowning’ of insulin production from the pancreas.
A couple of Canadian researches, on a whim, wondered whether those Islet cells, rather than be dead, were instead inflamed to the point where the cells couldn’t excrete the insulin.
They gave rats bred with type 1 diabetes a shot of capscacin (basically, the ‘hot’ in ‘hot sauce’ and hot peppers) and sure enough it cured the rats to the point where they were producing insulin.
The shot had to be readminitsterd once a month, but the point was that a $2.65 shot of capscascin could ‘cure’ a type 1 diabetic.

I hear Hostess, the manufacturer of Twinkies, is filing for bankruptcy. Perhaps people are finally realizing sugar is not a health food.

As a native Virginian I can tell you the New Yorkers had it coming. Especially youse guys who showed up and made snide remarks about “backwoods” southerners saying “y’all”.
You apparently met a different category of blacks than the ones I knew when growing up. I think most linguists would tell you that southern speech patterns cross race lines as do food preferences.
Thank you. It’s not the fat and protein. It’s the sugar and carbs. I think this country has so terrorized people over heart disease that we’re all living off sugar and carbs and we’ll all get diabetes instead.

I hate to tell you but a lot of people who lose weight lose the diabetes symptoms. This is not new.

I am a native Virginian and can promise you “y’all” and “ain’t “ had no place in the classroom. We actually had indoor bathrooms in our schools, if you can believe it.
I lived in CNY for 17 years. My kids were the only ones who said please, thank you, ma’am and sir consistently. The manners which seem natural to us was seen as fair game. Always good for a few giggles and grins. That was true in Syracuse and in New Jersey where my father was raised.
Doesn’t bother me until someone paints us with a broad brush.
I stopped watching Bourdain when he visited Laos and informed his viewers that the US wrecked Laos and apologized to his host family for it. The invading N. Vietnamese were the ones who invaded Laos as a pathway to S. Vietnam.
It’s most likely their diabetes went away, because to lose weight they reduced the things that were causing their insulin to be too high in the first place—which for most people is consuming to many carbohydrates.
If you measure the crime rate by how many calls are made to 911, then the obvious way to reduce the crime rate is to tell people to stop calling 911, right? Wrong.
Just as the 911 calls are just a symptom of the real underlying problem (actual criminals), excess body fat (especially belly fat on men) is a symptom of an underlying problem—excess insulin production.

Agreed. I hope she does well controlling her disease. Maybe she will revamp her cooking style to create scrumptious healthy recipes. I'd buy a PD cookbook like that.
She's from Albany, Georgia. I lived there for a year. The drawl in Albany is very, very thick. If anything, Paula has lost some of the Albany accent. :-)
I guess they forgot to mention that she still smokes too (another secret she hasn’t disclosed publicly).
