Remember the outrage on these boards when the Dems were pushing for passage of the DREAM Act?

You’re really on an anti-Newt rampage tonight. Who are you supporting? Mitt or Santorum or Paul

“I am opposed to anybody who came here illegally getting citizenship. That’s entirely wrong,” the GOP presidential candidate and former House speaker told a young man who asked about illegal immigrant students. “The only exception I would make is if young people, the ones you are dealing with, are willing to join the American military and serve the United States.”

In defense of Gingrich. The numbers here that Gingrich is talking about who do get into the military would be miniscule and given a path to citizenship versus millions of illegal immigrants inside the US. An analogy: only pocket change v. millions of bucks.

saying that he would grant a path to citizenship to illegal immigrant youths who agree to sign up and serve in the U.S. military.

Why even discuss something like that when there are proposals to reduce our ground forces by 80,000 during a terrible economy?

If you join the military, you get to be a citizen.

Makes all the sense in the world.

Heinlein agrees.

Military should always get 1000 votes.
Landowners. 500.
Those who paid taxes 7 or more years. 10
Citizens. 1.
Welfare Recipients 0.

I do indeed. This would have been slammed as "shamnesty" only a few short weeks ago.

I wish we had some of those so-called "RINO's" back like Daniels and Barbour again. They were far better than Newt.

They never bought into global warming or Federal healthcare mandates. And they've walked the walk, not just talked the talk.

The Dream Act was wrong, and rife with loopholes to give amnesty to virtually everyone who came here illegally. That is not what Newt stands for. What he does stand for is reason, and I will vote for him.

If all we get out of this election is a good, honest fight, then we have made the point. Romney is in no better position to win anything. I don’t want a kindly gentleman debating the pig, I want an attack dog. Even if Newt loses, BO will be greatly diminished. Not like McCain with his “my freind” BS. I want a FIGHT!

Horrible. McCain 2.0 on immigration. Newt would have signed the DREAM Act which was voted down (barely) last year. I cannot believe this is what we are left having no choice but to support. Mittens? Newt? Dullboy Rick? Sickening.

Sorry but if some young man or woman is willing to put his or her butt on the line fighting and serving our military then why not give them a shot at making it. This wouldn’t give citizenship, merely give them a chance. If it draws even a small percentage of the illegal gangbangers off our streets and into honorable service then I say job well done.

When the Dems were doing it they weren't trying to solve the problem but were trying to make things much worse.

I'm confident Newt wants to solve the problem (thrown most of them out, seal the border, end identity fraud etc.).

If I could make all the trouble go away by giving amnesty -- and Newt is not even talking about that -- to 1 or 2 or even 10,000 illegals I would do it in a heartbeat.

Considering that there is no more money for the military, I think this promise is virtually empty...which is good (in that way).

I don’t think it’s right to blame you for simply reporting what Newt said.

Maybe Newt is the best candidate available. If so, by all means support him—but hold his nose to the grindstone and clue him in. If he says this now, what will he do once he gets into office?

With Obama and his Communist Defense Secretary threatening to fire tens of thousands of American servicemen, into a civilian world where there aren’t any jobs, the last thing in the world we need is to replace our own citizens with illegal aliens.

What the hell is Newt thinking?

MUST READ for this thread:
Military Cutbacks Undermine Major Rationale for “DREAM Act”

The premise people like Gingrich (and Dick Durbin, and Luis Gutierrez) use for this position is absurd and unworkable.

I wish that someone would tell people that you don't have to be a citizen to be in the United States Military. We have tons of them in the Navy. This is a win for Newt quite frankly especially if he knows this is happening already. The only thing is that they can not have a security clearance. There are plenty of jobs in the military that do not require a security clearance. Oh and they do apply for citizenship once the time limit is acquired. Not all of them but the majority. My goodness it used to be a requirement that we take a certain percentage from the Philippines every year. That has been lifted but they are fully allowed to join the military from Philippines or anywhere else in the World that they would like to serve.

“saying that he would grant a path to citizenship to illegal immigrant youths who agree to sign up and serve”

The US has been doing this with the Filipinos for years and years. As said above the numbers would be minuscule. Hoodat is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill but does not know his history.
