It’s a pretty mainstream conservative position. Instead of creating some kind of police state to round up millions of illegals, we give them a reason to leave on their own. Don’t give them welfare, don’t allow anyone to hire them and don’t have any sanctuary cities and the problem should eventually resolve itself via attrition.

my kind of amnesty program. A nice air-conditioned bus ride, hot box lunch, promise of no criminal record and even a small cash payment for the first million to report for self-deportation. Same thing for the second million minus the cash payment. The third million get bench seating on a standard school bus and a cold lunch. The fourth million get box cars. After that, same thing, but the criminal record is imposed along with permanent ineligibility to ever re-enter the United States.
Gradual, announced stepped up enforcement encourages these poor mistreated illegals to come out of the shadows and go home.
