dictionaries ad nauseam | 26 January 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

argosy (AHR-GUH-see) noun
1. A large ship, or a fleet of ships, especially one carrying valuable cargo.
2. A rich source or supply.

Example sentences:
"Shylock: He hath an argosy bound to Tripolis, another to the Indies."
---William Shakespeare; The Merchant of Venice; 1596.

"We get a little bit detective story, a little bit gossip, and an argosy of insight."
---Amy Wallen; Book Review: 'Nom de Plume'; Los Angeles Times; Aug 8, 2011.

Etymology:
Shortening of Italian nave Ragusea (ship of Ragusa), after Ragusa, a maritime city on the Adriatic sea, modern day Dubrovnik, Croatia. Earliest documented use: 1577.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Looks like Romney is set to take FL, unless tonight’s debate changes things.

So basically the questions are, will Newt take the head off of another reporter and if so, will that trick still impress the voters.

The Hunger Games sounds like the sort of pretentious, star-filled charity sporting event that Ted Turner would multicast among his various networks.

yes, indeedy........send me NEWT....

on a day when I needed cheering up, too!

One of the reasons GW won was that everyday folks thought they could sit down and have a beer with him (although his would be alcohol free).......if I wanted to have lunch with any candidate it would be Newt.

When I was a little kid, my dad used to read a magazine called Argosy-I remember it because I was at that age at which reading has become a skill, so you read everything.

Obama wants the debt limit raised,
And the ‘rats run to do his bidding
But they forget who pays that bill-
Who do they think they’re kidding?

Are they insane or just delusional?
Do they believe that by royal decree
An argosy of treasure-filled galleons
Will come sailing across the sea?

It is probably far more likely that
Unless we put brakes on this ride
We’ll be living in huts of mud or turf
With the toilet in a shack outside

What is the book about? I’m reading “Beloved Exile” again-aside from being a nice story, it makes me aware that I don’t have it bad at all compared to a single woman in the dark ages...

Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

Sounds like a similar plot to this reality TV spoof:

Ever seen the show “Survivor” and wished they would just start killing each other?? Series 7 literally gives its contestants the guns. The film is not merely a satire on reality TV. It is an example of just how far people will shamelessly go for fame. 6 contenders are pitted against each other in a no holds barred, kill or be killed contest. The reigning champ is Dawn, a hard-nosed, mother-to-be. We go back and forth between Dawn and the other 5 contenders to see if someone can dethrone Dawn and become the new Champion. What is the prize? How are the contestants picked? These questions are not as important as asking yourself how shameless has our society become?
