A 3-year-old Canton girl who wandered away from home Thursday afternoon was found safe six hours later.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett Jr. said Zoey Smith was found just after 7 p.m. in a wooded area nearly two hours away, holding on to the collar of the family's pit bull named Brownie.

"The dog helped her stay safe, I think," he said.

NBC 5's Omar Villafranca snapped a photo of paramedics checking on Zoey inside an ambulance.

"It's just been a nightmare and a dream all come true in one night, you know?" said her father, Steven Smith.

Burnett said deputies began searching for the little girl after she was reported missing from her grandmother's home in the 1500 block of County Road 4027 in Canton.

The video says she was 2 MILES away.

Not 2 hours as the article states.

That’s a misprint in the text. Video says it was nearly two miles...still a fur piece for a 3-year-old.

“Video says it was nearly two miles...”

Thanks. Yes, that’s a long way for a 3 yr old

Good dog?

Brownie likely led the little girl into danger into the wilderness. I’d think twice before leaving her alone again with that dog.

Wonderful story. Just my opinion but Brownie looks like a Pit mix (do I see Lab or Retriever in the DNA?). Good boy, Brownie... you kept that little one safe!

I found a little girl one day that had wandered away from home and it was because the dog took off and she followed it. It very well could have been the dog’s fault.

It could of been the grownups fault......where were they?
Why was the little girl of three outside alone?

Don't think we have a mix here. Lots of exp here with these types of dogs. To me, appears to be a classic Staffordshire Terrier type. IME, they tend to be most the loyal and family friendly of this type. There are some exceptions due to bad breeding, poor caretaking/abuse/social exposure, and other external factors, but the rule holds true broadly.

Not seeking to dredge up and relive wacky PB Type dogs wars here on FR, just sharing my experience in view of the nice story of the recovered safe-and-sound-child.

Too often these missing young child reports turn tragic. This was a rewarding read this am, I thought.

And not a hint of Politics!

Well, yes—certainly— leaving a 3 yo alone outdoors with an alpha dog who will likely lead said child around in its desired direction. No one advocates allowing a dog to walk a child away from home sans parental supervision. We have a parental issue here.

Agreed. If you watch the news broadcast of the story, you'd see the parents look like OWS types. Mom has pierced eyebrows; punky looking. Dad looks like a grunge musician.

Before anyone protests here, YES you often CAN judge by appearances, when it comes down to how you CHOOSE to look.

I'm perilously close to sounding like an old man here(as I'm not-I'm 45) or snobbish, but these underclass ambassadors we see in this video are becoming normative...and has much broader implications for society. Disappointing.

They may not be reprobates, per se. Just demonstrably substandard citizens or limited, who will not be leading our country's resurgence.
