‘Chicks with Guns’: Photographing women who love their weapons
Las Vegas Sun ^ | Friday, Feb. 3, 2012 | 2 a.m. | By Tom Gorman

A landscape artist-turned-portait photographer, Lindsay McCrum enjoys exploring gender-based stereotypes. She has photographed young boys playing in military costumes with toy guns and young girls dressing up in their mothers’ fancy clothes.

After reading a provocative article in 2006 about the burgeoning gun business in the United States — an estimated 20 million women own guns — McCrum set off on a journey of discovery, photographing women and their weapons.

Meticulously, McCrum took portraits of 280 women and selected 81 for her coffee-table book, “Chicks With Guns,” which came out Oct. 1.

A few portraits might conjure images of Annie Oakley or Calamity Jane. Most don’t.

The year after MrR and I were married, I bought a new gun which I picked up (after the waiting period) on Good Friday. My husband did not know I bought the gun and it never occurred to me to ask him or mention it (newlywed).

Since we were having a big family Easter and I was in charge of making the Easter baskets for the kids, I decided to make one for me and MrR.

IDR what his was, but mine had the usual fake grass and candy along with a copy of Guns and Ammo, a box of 9mm ammo, the gun, extra clip, bore brush and swab and cleaning fluid and oil.

Easter morning, MrR was more than a little upset about the gun (mostly because I didn’t tell him), but also amused. Some of the best photos of me are from that day with me and my new gun.

It became the family joke that “you know things are bad when even the Easter Bunny is packing heat.”

You know, it is just like cooking. (photography) You think you know what you're doing, then you see the work of a professional and realize you've still got a long long way to go.

I'd like to think I know a little bit about photography. Yet I'm sure I only understand the mechanics of it, not the artistry. The models and firearms are great, but I was particularly struck by the composition and backdrops of the few sample photos on the site.

I may have to go pick up this book...

LOL! Years ago my ex wanted a sweet little Taurus 9 mil. I refused to ok it because a)we were broke and b) he was a bad drunk and we had a toddler.

So soon after, it was Mother’s Day, and for once I got a present. You guessed it - the gun in question.

I just quietly thanked him and put it away. He followed me around the house like a puppy for the rest of the weekend. “Let me show you the features”, and “You’re gonna love the grip. Go get it and try it out” “Hey, show your new gun to my buddy”, “Hey, I’ll go site (sight?) it in for you”, “Let me show you how to clean it with this kit I just happen to have and load it with this ammo I just happen to have, and break it in on this shooting match I just happened to have signed up for”, etc, etc etc.

I didn’t budge. It was my gun and it stayed locked in a box in my closet. It drove him INSANE!!!!

A few months later I sold it and he was LIVID. But lawyers cost money you know :-)

I contracted for this company once and the owner thought he was a baddas with
his puny little cute 9mm. One day he asked me if I carried and I said sometimes, so
since then he pushed me to bring my gun into the office for him to belittle thinking
I probably had a .38 (which he joked about me having). I walked into the office
packing concealed .357 w-laser, and my Kimber Ultra Carry .45.

He was so embarrassed I never got any work from the company again.
Gun envy.

One of the things that endeared the young woman I married 54 years ago was that one of our first dates was going to a local gun shop to buy our .22 rifles together for a day of shooting. One of our boys now has her rifle to teach his children. Her father was a skilled gunsmith, and we got along pretty good.

She does.

You can see Ma Richards here. It was a great speech, but the outcome was favorable (if only he could have read his own lips).

Excellent gun positive thread here, and although the author is a little Hollywood with her title, she successfully portrays the women each in their own context.

I'm not a big fan of coffee table books, but this is an exception.

I like most of the pics, but pretty as the woman is, this one strikes me as odd at best.

Conservative women are hot to us because they look strong, independent, and worth our attention. Liberal women are hot to the left because they look emotionally delicate (whether anorexic or obese), vulnerable, and desperate. I’ve never understood the appeal of bitter, needy women, even if they are desperate.
