4 new minority-owned networks enter pricey cable fray

Comcast Corp. , fulfilling one of the promises it made when it sought approval for its acquisition of a controlling stake in NBC Universal, said Tuesday it would launch four minority-owned independent networks that will be seen on Comcast Cable systems beginning in April.

The channels include Aspire, run by former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson, Revolt, led by Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and MTV veteran Andy Schuon; El Rey, a network offering action-oriented content to Latino and general audiences; and BabyFirst Americas, aimed at infants, young children and their parents.

One of the concerns some regulators had about the Comcast-NBC Universal transaction was that the combined entity would create more superchannels like USA, while ignoring the entertainment needs of minorities. Comcast said all along that it would work to make sure there would be diversity on its systems.

In the 1,000-channel lineups offered by pay-TV operators today, there are several channels marketed to African-Americans, most notably BET, TV One and Centric, but those networks are majority-owned by large conglomerates like Viacom Inc.

Has to be literally hundreds of viewers eagerly awaiting those network launches. Looks like Opra will have some competition for the “Who Cares?” segment of cable TV watchers.

Maybe Rev Wright and Bill Ayers will each get a channel.

They would never carry a conservative network of course.

We have “triple play” with Comcast. Monthly bill went up to $119 so the wife called them. They were running a deal for cable and internet without the phone for $65. The wife told Comcast we wanted to switch to that program. Guess what. Couldn’t do it. Well, we could, but it would cost $99 a month. She finally bitched enough they gave us the triple play for $99.

And those “deals” they run? The price may be good for one year. But the contract is for two years.

They have a monopoly and both political parties are to blame for it.

By they way, if you order cable from AT&T it really comes from Direct TV.

Imagine if you went to the grocery store and found that in order to get a box of raisin brand, then you also had to buy a box frosted flakes. This is exactly the same thing.

This has always been a real scam. The cable companies are forced to carry channels that people don’t want to watch because the owners of those channels also carry a few popular channels. And those owners dictate an all or nothing approach to the cable companies. Meanwhile the consumer gets to pay for them all. A simple way to fix this would be for congress to dictate that consumers with “Digital” cable be allowed the option of choosing which channels they want. And only paying for those channels too.

It won’t happen because one of the tools that Congress has for shoving there perverted ideologies on you is by ramming Social engineering, and anti morality channels down your throat. When Barney Frank wants to Shove the gay channel on you then this is his tool for doing it.

YEah, because minorities are too stupid to know what to watch on all the other channels. How freaking demeaning to be balkanized by media, like if you don’t watch the “black” or “latino” channels, you’re missing something, or you’re not “in the right spot that we think you ought to be in” on cable.

This crap just makes me sick. I suppose if the market can support it, I guess then minorities don’t mind being stereotyped and pigeonholed into what’s “black” or “latino” and what isn’t.

One of the concerns some regulators had about the Comcast-NBC Universal transaction

Eventually everything will be illuminated!

Quid pro quo -- So the community organizer's minions gave the go ahead to Comcast as long as Comcast sets up new channels -- vessels -- for the leftist "organizers" to take over, just as they did w/ the schools and universities and media, and sell their ware directly to their constituents.

There we go, obamabum's Winning The Future!

What happened to a la Carte cable? Cable TV prices in general?

Look no further than the sports networks(ESPN, FOXsports, etc.)...which are taking in the largest percentage of your cable dollar.
