I did! I was crazy about him as a kid. I knew he came up around horses (as did I). His small frame suited him well as a jockey.

"They were primarily actors given instruments and #1 hit songs written by Neil Diamond."

Not enntirely true. Nesmith and Tork were actual musicians. Only Jones and Dolenz were actors. Also, Carole King was another one of the song writers.

He was performing in a group from the Broadway musical Fantasticks on the Ed Sullivan Show the same night of the Beatles debut. After watching the Beatles he decided he wanted to be in a band.

For a fake band, they had a lot of good songs! RIP Davy.

The only fake musician was Mickey Dolenz, and he was an actor. The other three were good musicians, Peter Tork in particular (yeah, he played the dumb one, but as I recall he was the only one with a degree).

first concert I ever saw, on the Steal Pier in Atlantic City, mayby 1972. It was just Davey, not with the Monkees.
Also the first album I ever bought myself was the Monkees 2nd album

Interesting factoid: David Bowie (born David Robert Jones) originally was known as Davie Jones, until The Monkees became famous; he wisely changed his stage name then.

Many years ago I got to meet Davy in a hotel I worked at in Novi, Michigan. He stayed one night because he was going to be a guest on Kelly & Co., a local talk show. All I can say is that he was very outgoing, and loved talking with everyone. He laughed and smiled easily and often...everyone liked him. RIP sir.

Daydream Believer was written by John Stewart of the Kingston Trio. Don Kirschner tried to get the Monkees to record Sugar, Sugar and they refused so he formed a fictitious group to sing it. The first recordings by the Monkees used professional musicians,James Burton was the guitarist on Last Train To Clarksville and the theme song of the Monkees.

Ummmm...excuse me, but they were not a fake band. They released 13 albums total and were all very talented musicians and song writers! They started MTV of the 60's and monkeyed around in between hits! They produced albums and groups from then on and some of the biggest artist had them write songs! Oh...I was in love with Mike when I was a little girl:) My favorite song;
