GENOA, Italy - The United States and its latest coach have a signature victory. Against four-time world champion Italy, no less.
Gaining a rare win over a soccer power, the United States beat Italy 1-0 Wednesday night on Clint Dempsey's goal in the 55th minute for the Americans' first win over the Azzurri in 11 games spanning 78 years.
"It's just a confidence builder," Dempsey said. "We're just trying to move in the right direction and trying to get as sharp as we can for the summer and the World Cup qualifying games because the goal is to qualify for the World Cup. It's important to come to places like this and play big teams on their own soil and get results. At times it wasn't pretty, but we grounded out the result tonight."
American players applauded each other and their fans, who cheered loudly and proudly waved the red, white and blue after Jurgen Klinsmann's biggest win as U.S. coach.
Klinsmann, the former German national team star player and coach who has lived in California for more than a decade, replaced the fired Bob Bradley last summer. The Americans won their fourth straight match with their third consecutive shutout to improve to 5-4-1 under Klinsmann.
"It's historic for us beating a team of Italy's level," Klinsmann said. "If you beat Italy on their own soil then that means a lot. ... Obviously as a coach you're pleased because you see them progressing, you see young players stepping up and playing against these amazing, experienced Italian players who have won the World Cup and played big tournaments year in and year out. Obviously it was a big step for us."

Impressive!
Despite the headline I believe the US has beaten Italy before.
Not
Thank goodness for Dempsey. Altidore looked tired from the start.
Well done USA!
If England go out I shall support the US, even though I’m more of a Rugby man myself. Would be nice to see a US rugby team competing internationally as well.
Now if an Italian football team such as Gladiatori Roma or Etruschi Livorno could beat an NFL team, that would really be big news.
Real MEN do not play soccer. Only Girly Boys do.
Thanks for sharing. Your inability to cheer for the United States is noted, Rambo.
Please, enlighten us with your accomplishments in the world of “real men” sports. Let me guess...you never even got CLOSE to playing on ANY varsity team in high school, right, sweetie?
It is usually people who are not athletes or athletic that make these jokes.
A psychic you are not, but you may be psychotic. I played varsity football and varsity baseball in college.
I stand by soccer being a sport for girly boys. I will even go so far as to say it is the gayest alledged “sport” (or is that spurt in locker room parlance?) in the world.
The sport appears to be popular with the wusses who are unionixed school teachers, faggots, and followers of Mohammed...all groups the United States of America would be better off if they dissappeared.
Correction: Cheering for a team is not the same as cheering for the United States.
SO as a "varsity baseball" player, you must be familiar with Cal Ripken, right? Well guess what sport he played in high school (and was pretty darn good at) in addition to baseball? So, is Cal Ripken (big Republican donor, BTW) a school teacher, faggot or follower of Mohammed, Mr All Star?
Ndamukong Suh also was a soccer player (and still is a soccer enthusiast). I guess he's one of those "faggots" too?
George S. Patton you are not. (And you appear to have a thing for “girly men”). Penn State grad, perhaps?
