I like that when I take a picture on the iPhone, it’s available on the computer. When I plug a digital camera into iPhoto and upload some, or drop some photos onto iPhoto, the photos are available on the iPhone.

No iTunes, no syncing, but the Photo Stream feature of iCloud.

Yeah, too easy I guess.

The problem many people have with Apple is that we’re used to doing things the hard way. Why should we be looking for a DCIM folder? Why should we even have to know what that folder is or why it’s named that, what’s a THM file, why there’s a WAV file in my photos folder, etc. I had this problem in the beginning installing an UPS — that I could just plug it in and it would automatically work didn’t occur to me after having recently installed the same model on the Windows box.

Your post just reinforces my point. You're happy living in Apple's closed ecosystem and in that ecosystem things are 'easy' to do; and that's great for you.

But those of us that have technical skills and run things other than Apple products don't find their products 'easy to use.'

I don't really need to know about "DCIM/100Apple" as my OS of choice (Ubuntu Linux) will recognize that a digital camera has been plugged in and will launch a photo manager. However, due to Apple's closed system, that using that photo manager to copy pictures to the iPhone won't cause said pictures to appear in the iPhone's photo gallery.

Again, do things the way Apple wants you to do and it's "simple," but if you want to do things even slightly different it's a real PITA. If that works for you, fine; I'm not trying to talk anyone into or out of a particular way of doing things (unlike Apple ;) ). But I'm not buying a Mac or a copy of iPhoto just so I can load some photos onto my wife's iPhone, and it's a real pisser that Apple's products won't do things that the cheapest digital camera or MP3 player on the planet will.
