phatic; adj.
denoting speech used to express or create an atmosphere of shared feelings, goodwill, or sociability rather than to impart information: phatic communion.
Etymology:
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

A+++ i am not remotely sure of what to make over the Rush flap. Why did he apologize? the advertisers abandoning him are just plain stupid IMO.

i know you guys all remember our very first dog, Darby. CJ knew him intimately, since he met him in person, when Darby tried to remove CJ’s family jewels from his person... Well we had lost touch with the trainer from the Old Town School for Dogs who took him for me. I’d learned, since Jules matriculated there recently, that Linda had moved to NC. Well Sat PM i got a sad email from her. She wrote to inform me that they’d had to put Darby down last week, bc they’d discovered a fast-growing cancer a few months back. He was good right up until they put him down, she said and she included a pic taken last week. I was sad to learn of his passing and cried some tears for him. I was very grateful to her for letting us know, and for having taken him for us 9 years or so ago.

His apology was actually crafted well. He did not back down from his “Position” that Government should not have to pay for people to have recreational sex, he just apologized for the word “slut”. (Now I would like to see Bill Maher apologize for calling Sarah a MUCH WORSE thing.)
Anyway, the sponsors are showing their true colors. Hopefully, others will “Rush” in to take their place.

yes, i noticed that, but hasn’t Rush said incendiary things before, why apologize now for this one? is there something different about the word slut that merited an apology? i am just asking, bc i haven’t followed the controversy in any depth, and i am curious.
He used the wrong word anyway. A woman who wants to be paid for sex is a prostitute. He should have called it correctly.

Well, to a “gentleman” the word is very rude and supremely insulting to a woman. Although Rush has said many “incendiary” things before, I believe that deep down this may have offended his own sensibilities, as he is, at the core, “Old School”.
I don’t use the word at all, and used to cringe when I heard it even on SNL’s “Point/Counterpoint” (Jane, you ignorant slut). However, the words that Maher used are EVEN WORSE and he has never apologized. It’s a profound double standard.
JMO.
