Kalispell Police Shoot and Kill Dog After Attack

A police officer shot and killed a large dog on Wednesday evening after Kalispell Chief of Police Roger Nasset says the animal "charged one of the officers...bearing its teeth and growling. The officer, out of fear for his safety, shot the dog as it came within 10 feet from him."

The incident began just after 6 p.m. when officers were called to the 600 block of First Avenue West for a report of two vicious dogs that had just attacked an adult male. Nasset says in a news release that three officers responded and found the dogs at St. Matthews.

The officers corralled the dogs on the south end and were waiting for a catch pole to arrive when one of the dogs, that weighed about 100 pounds, charged an officer according to a news release.

Nasset says that's when the officer fatally shot the dog, that died on the scene. The other dog, which did not show aggression towards officers, was taken into custody and later transported to the Flathead County Animal Shelter.

Officers were approached by four juveniles while they were on the scene and were told that the same dogs had attacked them earlier on Second Avenue East according to Nasset. None of the victims sustained serious injuries.

Nasset says Kalispell Police are still investigating the incident.

In this instance the officers acted reasonably, in my opinion.

One dog was taken into custody, the aggressive large dog shot. The dogs reportedly had already attacked an adult male while running loose.

I agree, wonder what breed they were, if any.

Pretty large at 100lbs.

My largest Boxer is 72# lbs, she’s pretty tall and not fat, the smaller Boxer is 54# and a little plump.

When my GSD was young, she was usually in the mid to high 80’srange. We keep her on the lean side now—age and poor hips.

All my dogs are female and male dogs are usually heavier/larger. Sooo...

I am guessing it probably was not a Pitt (though I am unsure of their weight range) but something as large or larger than a Boxer or GSD.

Maybe a Rotti?

I’m beginning to understand why all my cats go hide under the bed when the doorbell rings: they’re afraid it’s the cops.

I went to a two room school house on Flathead Lake in Rollins, MT. It was exactly half way between Kalispell (northern tip of the lake) and Polson (southern tip of the lake) on the western shore line.

Beautiful country, just beautiful.

Kalispell police once had a serious reputation for going after bad guys too. When I lived there as a boy (in ancient, tough times- the 30’s), the local sheriff carried a big revolver in his holster and one day he chased down a thief who had lifted a purse from a woman. He shot the perp in the back and calmly walked away. The newspaper the next day called the sheriff a hero. Most everyone agreed.

I just read "Roam" by Alan Lazar. He describes it as "a novel with music" (he is a musician and has included links to a number of original compositions associated with the story). It covers the whole life of a purebred dog which gets separated from his first owner "the love of his life" and goes on the road. A significant part of the story actually takes place in Kalispell. I would have to say that the town is portrayed as "neutral to dogs" at best.

It's a pretty touching story which tries to convey in human terms what a lone dog has to go through in tough times.

Grew up near Polson. Used to stop at M&S Meats on the hiway at Rollins - great jerky! Beautiful country - Flathead, Glacier, Whitefish. Yup. Just couldn’t make a living there.

Milt & Silvia Meats! YUM, they had the best summer sausage. Did you used to go the Buffalo BBQ / potlock / raffle / in the summer? Oh, we wont discuss how many years ago that was! LOL

Someday, when I am independantly wealthy, and I'm not worried about working, I am going to go back up that way, if I can avoid the CA Libs that came in and tried to turn it into "but that's not the way it was where I came from". (shudders)
