So who was the IRA fighting against and for what reason?

The IRA was fighting for a unified Ireland, free from British control.

The Irish republic has been independent of the UK since 1949. Northern Ireland remains part of the UK.

These travellers are not from Northern Ireland. They are from the Republic. Many still have homes over there. Thus, they are Irish. Not British, by even the loosest of definitions.
