Now that the San Antonio federal court has released new redistricting maps, some Texas voters are getting trying to sort out conflicting information about their voting status.
February 29, 2012 · When the redistricting dust finally settles, whenever that is, some Texans are wondering if theyll be able to vote in the in the state party primaries.
But a problem has arisen because an email currently circulating tells folks they are no longer a registered voter.
"I think its some sort of informed ignorance," says Fred King, communications manager for the Harris County Voters Registrar.
He said Texas counties have not been able to send out the updated voter registration cards until the redistricting court kerfuffle is gaveled out, but some people are saying the lack of new voter registration cards is a political shenanigan.
"Need to add an extra layer of tin foil to their hats," King continues.
Rich Parsons, the spokesperson for the Texas Secretary of States office, said they aregetting emails and phone calls from concerned voters.
"Yes, our office is aware of some misinformation circulating regarding the voter registration cards expiring."
Parsons wanted to make it clear to voters that the expiration of voter registration cards on Dec. 31, 2011 will not prevent citizens from voting in upcoming elections.
"Whats most important here is that all registered voters remain registered. The card expired, but the registrations remain valid," he says.
King said something positive might actually come from the redistricting court chaos.
"With all the stir over redistricting and all the stir over this email, people will be much more interested in voting in the primaries when we finally get them settled," said King.
This has all the feel of a Democratic Party dirty trick.
There’s gonna be some P.O.’d people on election day.
Looks like I’m going to be in the same district I’ve always been in, so shouldn’t be a problem for me.
Look to Travis County for the source of the rumor.
We haven't received our new ones yet but we vote in every election.
I'm going to keep track of this screw up.
Two words for you: Dana DeBeuvior.
Two other: Dan and Robin Rather.
Exactly.
Please do keep track of this; I hope that all Texas Freepers will learn about this (if they don’t know already) and make certain their registration is up to date.
