Fascinating stuff! The Irish side of my family came from County Mayo as well.. the town of Kilmaine.
Great post- thanks
Happy St Patrick's Day!
I have people in my family tree from Mayo. I am pretty sure they were Gannons.
Did you deliberately choose her name in honor of this Grace O’Malley?
BTW, I apologize on behalf of the state of Maryland for the disgrace our Communist governor has brought to the O’Malley name.
the infowarrior
Were she alive today, she would disown Martin O' Malley from the clan, even as she disowned her eldest son for supporting Bingham, who had murdered his brother....

Grandfather Toler said he was Scotch/Irish and the devil. Never met him, he died for I was born, but pretty well assured of the devil part.
“O’Malley’s Rule!”
I’m thinking of another Irishman who became a pirate. I can’t remember his name!
He converted to islam then lead raids on IRELAND carrying off the entire population of Baltimore, Ireland, sold them into slavery in Morocco. He lived during the reign of Charles I.
There is a wikipedia entry for the Sack of Baltimore. Not sure how accurate it is:
“The attack was led by a Dutch captain turned pirate, Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, also known as Murad Reis the Younger. Murad’s force was led to the village by a man called Hackett, the captain of a fishing boat he had captured earlier, in exchange for his freedom. Hackett was subsequently hanged from the clifftop outside the village for his conspiracy.”

Them d***ed Dutch! But then they share a border with Belgium!
I do remember of reading about other Irish pirates converted to islam and raided the isles.
Me late mother’s family also came from County Mayo—Roscommon was the hamlet. Conboy and Gormley were the surnames...
Did you deliberately choose her name in honor of this Grace OMalley?
***Partly. It’s a little bit like having the last name of Revere and naming your son Paul. I’ve been telling her that she is also named after the Grace of God, which is what the original Granuaile was named after, and that I expect her to redeem the name. It is a beautiful name.
Besides, it has such rich history and amazing story to it, that it’s a name to be proud of. Some british lady at my church asked who that beautiful child was and she was told, Grace O’Malley. The lady said, “Oh my God, do the parents know who Grace O’Malley was?” And she was told, yes they do. She acted as if she’d just heard of someone named Yasir Arafat.
I look forward to the day when Hollywood picks up on this story of a female pirate who commanded respect from men in her age. It will prove interesting.
