My great Aunt lived through hard times during the Depression. As a result, when she was older she ate A LOT because she could. She was a rather large lady but absolutely hilarious into her 90’s. When they asked her about having a health care proxy and what her wishes were, she said she wanted a DNR but she did not want to die from dehydration as that would be horrible. But she also said if she couldn’t feed herself, it was time to go but it would be her daughter’s call on a feeding tube. She also joked, at 92, if I wake up and I ask for a sandwich, give me one. A year later she was in the hospital and the doctors were asking her daughter about the feeding tube as my great aunt had slipped into a coma. At that minute she
opened her eyes and asked for a sandwich, before closing her eyes and
peacefully passing away. A sense of humor until the end!
