Oh, I've also got an Enfield No. 4 with a cut-down stock. It does everything you'd expect the Mosin to do, plus it's more pointable, it cycles faster, and it holds half a box of ammo in the magazine.

Not that there are any flies on the Mosin, mind you. The Russians used it because it bloody well worked.

What rifles do you currently have?

Dear various government agencies who are reading this thread, I have some golf clubs, a few saws - and a pair of nail clippers that I suppose could be construed as a deadly weapon, or at least that's what the TSA says - anyhoo, it was fun talking to you and being scanned by the Big Ear lets me know that you care.

An 870 will never let you down. If you can afford it, pick up the M1A in the SOCOM variant. Bought one for my son and am kicking myself that I didn’t keep it for me.

AR15 in 6.5 Grendel. Build it yourself. You will want a chrome bolt carrier group. The most important parts for accuracy are trigger then barrel. If you are really serious about accuracy then your scope should be planned as a separate purchase and should cost at least as much as your rifle. Don’t get drawn into the “piston is king” fallacy, as gas impingement is far more accurate than any piston system. Go to AR15.com if you get stuck on the build process.

Kimber fan myself :) I also like the Judge as a solid back-up revolver.

If you can’t afford the Armalite or the Springfield then the choice is easy:

AK clone in 7.62 X 39.

Should run you less than $500.00. Then buy ammo by the tin.

End of thread.

Don’t forget to stock up on cleaning supplies (patches, CLP, etc.) and any firearm-specific tools, as applicable.

I would suggest this:

The 50rd mag gives a nice amount between having to reload; especially useful in a mob-type situation. It's pretty accurate, though the 5.7mm round doesn't go as far as some other rifle-rounds, and being a bit of an odd caliber won't be easily available in a SHTF situation... well, unless you happen upon SWAT equipment as it's pretty popular there.

45-70 w/nineteen inch barrel and mag tube all the way to the end. Get a lace on butt pad and fire for effect.

A few folks are mentioning “the judge” as a good revolver. The .410 is proving to be anemic from a pistol. Check out the “box o’ truth” for more info. Appears to be good for snakes and that's about it. I guess on the plus side you can shoot a .45LC out of it and that's an ok round for self defense.
