Personal/professional website building?

Posted on 03/25/2012 2:56:24 PM PDT by Feline_AIDS

Need to make a website to showcase my portfolio for potential employers.

Can I do this easily with Wordpress? If I pay them ~$25/year for a blog and domain name, what sort of functionality am I losing?

I would only need a few pages on the site: about, portfolio, resume, and blog.

Will Wordpress work, or should I go through multiple other channels?

Thanks as always for your help, Freepers.

Plenty of Freepers stand ready to help you with first class product for small bucks.
Ask to look at their websites (such as mine).

Well, you CAN use hubpages.com. It is free and pretty quick to get up and get going. Wordpress is not bad, but you can go crazy trying to get it set up.

Depends on what your goal is. (You must have a goal.) If you goal is to get your information out to the greatest number of people, if I were you, I would use hubpages. If your goal is to look good and professional, I would use Wordpress. One good strategy that a friend of mine used was to set up a pretty good looking package on Wordpress, then he set out postcards to HR directors with his URL. Got fairly good response and got hired.

But be careful. Remember that, once you put your information out there, everyone from HR directors and assistants to stalkers can get it.

Use a portfolio template.

Wordpress IMO is pretty comprehensive as far as a site builder. Undoubtedly you’ll have to play around with it for some time to get it to look how you want it. I am not sure that whatever site you use to host your site will have sufficient capacity to store you work(s) but that’s a separate matter. I see no reason why Wordpress could not do what you need, at least from the limited explanation you’ve given.

Are you going to provide your potential employers with the URL to your website or are you expecting them to find you?

If you are expecting people to just find you, as I understand (and I’m no web expert by any means) just putting up a website doesn’t mean your website will come up on searches.

What kind of work do you do? Graphics? Illustrations? Paintings?

Your ISP may allow you to do that. My cable internet does. And it is already included in the cost of highspeed internet.

You could use LinkedIn with Behance and do it yourself for free.

Thanks for all the great replies so far.

I’d be providing the url for potential employers, not just hoping they’d find me.

I’d post about creative marketing projects with some images, some videos, and text. Not a massive amount of any particular media.

Design is a priority. From the replies, I’m leaning toward Wordpress, but if I wanted to build a particular site design, would Wordpress allow that, or would I be stuck with their templates?
