The ex-teacher, accused of murdering more than 20 women, will defend himself in court as he does not have faith in lawyers
Alleged ‘cyanide killer’ Mohan Kumar of Dakshina Kannada district has been studying law in prison as he prepares to defend himself in court. He is accused of killing 20 girls after promising marriage. He was arrested in October 2009.
He faces four cases in Bangalore, six in Madikeri, four in Mangalore and some more in various locations. The cases are being handled by a special Fast Track Court. He had turned down the court’s offer of a government lawyer because he does not believe that they can defend him successfully. Mohan has drawn up a list of 200 books to study, including ones on famous defence victories across the world. He immersed himself in these books for the last five months. He has already presented his defence in four cases.
Teacher to killer Mohan, a primary school teacher, is suspected of committing the murders between 2008 and 2009. His alleged victims were girls of marriageable age from middle class families.
He would visit such families with a marriage proposal. If accepted, he would begin communicating with the girl and within a week, call her to Bangalore, Mangalore or some other location. He would order her not to share the details of the meeting with the family.
He would take her to a hotel and initiate sexual relations, taking care not to use contraceptives. The next morning, he would tell the girl that they had to leave urgently due to communal violence in the area. But before leaving, he would advise her to hand over all ornaments to him for safekeeping. After reaching the bus stand, he would hand over a pill describing it as a contraceptive and advise the girl to consume it in the public toilet. Once the girl went to the toilet, he would slip away with her ornaments and cell phone.
The girl would consume the pill, but unknown to her, it would be filled with cyanide powder, a poison which can cause death in seconds.
The then inspector of Bantwal police station, K Nanjundegowda, was confounded when many women went missing in his jurisdiction. He tracked down Mohan to Vitla town, near Bantwal.
Now the inspector at Sampigehalli in Bangalore, Nanjundegowda said, “He is not counting on lawyers to defend him. He has requested the jailor for many law books.”
I can’t see how law books are going to help this bastard.
Unless he wants to challenge evidence. Otherwise, he’s toast.
