In yesterday's attack on the proposed Republican budget in the House, obama said "Hundreds of national parks would be forced to close for part or all of the year." (Transcript here). However, there are only 58 national parks (source here).

Better take a screen cap of that wikipedia page ASAP. Obama activists will be changing it very soon to reflect "100's of National Parks".

Actually, there are 379 “sites”, like Minuteman National Historic Park run by the National Park Service, but not a “National Park”. If he had said National Park Service sites, he might not be talking total smack. A lot of them, like the Lowell National Historical Park could disappear without anyone other than the immediate families of the employees even noticing.

I noticed that the national lakeshores aren’t included either.

Wiki has an incomplete list too.

According to the The National Parks: Index 2009–2011 published by National Park Service, there are 58 National Parks. To verify, go to the following page, and scroll down to the table titled "Statistical Summary":

http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/nps/nps/part1.htm

Maybe you are thinking of national monuments, national historical sites, etc.?

I think its a matter of designation. Here in Michigan we have two national lakeshores that are really no different than national parks aside from the designation.

I’m not sure what wikipedia used as a source, the the National Park Service web site list 432 locations on their “Find a Park” page.

There should be no “national” parks anyway. I hope the Feds are so broke they are forced to relinquish all lands back to the rightful owners...THE STATES.

The National Park Service administers approx. 400 sites, but only 58 are "National Parks." (There are also National Monuments, National Historic Sites, National Battlefields, etc..) See post 25 for verification.

I'm sure the libs will use the ~400 number to weasel out of obama's lie, but technically his statement is false. Saying "Hundreds of national parks would be forced to close..." is a lot scarier than saying "Hundreds of sites administered by the national park service would be forced to close...". obama knows that. He's intentionally bending the truth to spread fear.

He is uneducated and ignorant... he is not smart or even average and I would think that he lost his law license because he is not qualified to practice law... he does not know the Constitution and he is nothing but a liar and a street punk.

Yep, I knew a guy in the late 70’s that yearned for a job at one of these parks. Nice gig if you could get it. Smoke pot all day AND get retirement benefits!

I feel bad for the park rangers who depend on local visitors for donations but hey, not THAT bad!

I don’t get donations for my grocery/gas bill.

You mean in all 57 states, there are only 58 National Parks?

58 parks. They close every night. Times 365 days?

Hell's Belles! That's thousands of closings!

The federal gov “owns” huge amounts of all land west of the mississippi. Sell that land off and we’d have plenty of money to pay off the debt.

Agree. But I'd tie it to a balanced budget amendment.
