My favorite Stroud episode was on an island in the Canadian arctic. I have never seen him catch a substantial fish except for this episode. He brought in about half a dozen large char. Best eating fish in the world. He had a feast with lots more left over for the crew.
As far as I know, Les wasn’t the one who operated that way.
Always saw Les as the real McCoy.
A couple months ago - there was some mention here on FR that Les Stroud might be bringing back a new and improved Survivorman.
Haven’t heard any more since then. I’d sure watch.
Did you notice he always went skinny dipping in every episode? I guess they wanted womenfolk to watch.

Sorry, that is what I was trying to say. Bear has admitted to staying in hotels during his shows. In one of his early shows it was very obvious. In one scene his clothes are all dirty and the next he’s freshly laundered.
I’d watch a new Survivorman show. I didn’t really like his series on the primitive cultures but the earlier seasons were great.

Not trying to be difficult, just sticking up for Les Stroud.
He seems like good people.
He’s real but doesn’t have the marketing savvy of Bear. Don’t think he cares to play the mass marketing game though.

Sounds like Keith Olberman, maybe Bear is a 10 million dollar chandelier made out of animal dung and his own urine.....
Les is an example of “do what you love, and the money will take care of itself”. Not the kind of guy looking for mass marketing, he just documents doing his thing and others find it fascinating enough to pay for.
Watching his primitive cultures series now. Not as compelling as his week-alone shows, but a good insight into what it’s like to live in base survival mode as the norm - and why we don’t.
I appreciate his interest in documenting and preserving such cultures, yet at the same time realize the reason they’re dying out is their axioms are untenable.
Wanted to watch Bear, but his obsession (oft recounted by a friend who was a fan) with consuming, er, waste products was ... discouraging.
My tagline was taken from one of his shows. He was fishing and had caught a small fish. At that point Bear usually takes a messy bite of the fish.
Les started to do that and then said what my tagline says.
Not only that, but his tendancy to do things that would get most people killed is also discouraging. The worst one IMO was using the two wood poles to climb down a 50 foot well in the desert, supposedly for some water. Only someone in tip top shape could do it, even then they’d likely slip and kill themselves.
very stupid IMO, but then he could do it because he had a support staff behind the cameras. In some of those shows you can see safety lines which arent supposed to be there.

Before I got a gut full of him and quit watching, I saw one where he was swimming up a narrow water filled canyon. He found a rope hanging down from far above. I better climb this... and up he went without knowing the strength, age, or even what it was tied to above.
Then there was the time on a mountain top when he was headed to lower country. He said the best way is to run, and took off downhill over rough ground and plants at a fast clip. See how he survives with a shattered ankle.
