Maryland offering $200 gift cards for dead snakehead fish
Yahoo ^ | 04/06/2012 | Eric Pfeiffer

Getting paid to fish sounds like a dream come true to some. But does it have the same appeal if you're going up against a "fish from hell" that can travel on land and sink its teeth into a steel-toed boot?

Why don’t they just put them up for adoption?

How accessible are disposal stations? I wonder how many backcountry folks have digital photo capability. You bring up a good point. Then, again, if you can figure out how to make them taste good, it makes sense to eat what you kill. (Bugs and vermin don’t count.)

Yup, the Bowfin is called a choupique (a Choctaw word for mud fish, pronounced shoe pick).
Them two look closely related.
Catch one every now and then fishing for bass, you think you have a 5 pound bass on the line, then you see it's a danged choupique, LOL.

The deer harvest in MD for 2011-2012 was more than 98,000 and every one of those was checked in. All you need to dispose of these finned vermin is a dumpster and bag of lime. If the angler wants to keep the fish for food, have the check-in agent remove the head rendering it unusable for a second bounty.
As to "back country folk"....think thay one over again FRiend.

I intended no insult. Most of my neighbors are elderly, don’t use computers and don’t even get email. Searching for local services online usually doesn’t have good results. We ask around and get what we need. A good number of the businesses on Main St. (about a block long) don’t accept credit cards. They will accept personal checks or my word.) I don’t know where you live, but our home is described by the locals as, “the middle of nowhere.” I used to live across the street from a meth lab. Before that, I lived in an inner urban area. It was quite unpleasant and we’re very blessed to live where we live now. We’re in a good Christian community and don’t have to worry about home invasions or drive-by shootings. I’m in back country and happy to be here. Our neighbors are generous enough to tell us that we “...fit right in.” (We don’t believe them but appreciate their kindness.) They have tractors, horses, raise prize-winning coon hounds, hunt their food, etc. I don’t know any of those things. Some are tech-savvy, some not. (I’m not tech-savvy.) So if you think my fine neighbors have been insulted, FRiend, you are barking up the wrong gypsy.

A blessed Easter to you and yours.

I lived in NYC for 57 years, now I live in the hills of North Central WV....much the same as rural MD. If folks where you live take deer (not poach), they can take the snakeheads to the same place they check the deer in provided the state DNR has enough sense to set it up. (Though from the sounds of the present program, they don't) Much of what you describe fits where I now live. The fact that they would take my personal checks, even from my NY bank, when I was scouting for a home surprised me also. Folks here had cable before we had it in my old NYC neighborhood and just about EVERYONE has internet access either from cable or a dish. Those that don't are assisted by those who do. If your neighbor wanted to upload a picture for the $200 gift card, I'm sure he wouldn't mind giving you a couple of bucks to do it for him.

Leaving the “most diverse county in the US” and coming here ten years ago was the best move I've ever made, but I'll never die a Mountaineer. I'll always be “that boy from New York City.”......I can't lose the accent (sigh)

Was this one identified incorrectly? It doesn’t seem to have the numerous sharp little teeth.

I’m in TN, not Maryland. I moved from the city to the desert, and from the desert to the forest. It doesn’t get any better than this. They don’t criticize my speech or my ignorance. We live too far out in the county for cable, so we have satellite. And we (actually my husband) fix gardening equipment and vehicles, mend fences, etc., w/o charge. I’ve taken photos and have offered to email them to my neighbors, but they refuse to use computers. Fine by me. I learn everything I can from them. The request for information is usually prefaced with, “I need to borrow your brain.” They haven’t failed us yet.

That fish looks like Paul Krugman. Which of course is insulting to the fish.

I cannot wait for the “Save the Snakehead” campaign by PETA.
