ROOKERY SEASON 2012
self | April 8, 2012 | swampsniper

Posted on 04/08/2012 11:26:20 AM PDT by SWAMPSNIPER

Daughter Mary and I made a quick run through the gator farm rookery. It's still winding up but when it gets hotter I won't be able to handle it. I got enough for several posts, these are all I had the energy to process today, gonna take a nap now.

This was the first outing for my Sony since it got back from the repair shop. No problems so far!

Photobucket

Snowy Egret Egretta thula

Wood Stork, Mycteria americana

Roseate Spoonbill Platalea ajaja

I wish I had a camera the other day. I saw a bald eagle with something in its talons trying to escape a mobbing by crows. It landed in a large oak and tried to fight off the villains.

That is a Great Egret. It used to be called the Common Egret many years ago. I've seen two Latin names listed for it -- Casmerodius albus (the old Latin name for the species, I think) and Ardea alba (the Latin name carried in more recent books).

The Great Egret is much larger than the Snowy Egrets shown in SWAMPSNIPER's secong photo above. The Great Egret is listed in Sibley as 39 inches in length while the Snowy is listed as 24 inches long.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two egrets:

Great shots once again, SS.
And the weather looks great too. Nice deep blue sky which I won't aee 'up here' for a while yet.

The sky in the 3rd one looks like the same color as a Fender© Strat guitar I'm drooling over.
My bad weather hobby, Rock and Roll & Blues ;-)

Awesome! Thanks for the expert description!

I always loved birds. My dad does too. I am sure his interest in them at the farm while I grew up, caused me to also have a special interest in them.

I still feed and water the birds on my own little farm.

I am in Wisconsin. We get huge sand hill cranes flying overhead and landing in our fields. Quite impressive compared to the more common smaller birds. I saw a kestrel yesterday flying around. So beautiful.

Cheers
