2 salmon-eating sea lions killed at Bonneville Dam
Associated Press – Fri, Apr 6, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Washington state wildlife spokesman says two salmon-eating California sea lions have been captured this week at Bonneville Dam and killed by lethal injection.

The Oregonian reports the deaths are the first this year after a federal judge ruled last month the program could proceed.

Washington Fish and Wildlife spokesman Craig Bartlett says the sea lions were captured Tuesday.

I remember my Grandma's sealskin coat. Loved running my fingers through the fur as I stood next to her. Prolly be a good way to recoup some of the cost of the program.

I think you'd have to ask a native Alaskan or Canadian but my guess is, since they're aquatic mammals with a nice heavy coat of fat, they're pretty damned tasty. Cuteness doesn't deter "Natives" from a food source like it does most Americans and even those don't care much as long as someone else does the slaughter out of sight. That being said, wailing from the Bambi Mob is to be expected.

My tribe (Yuroks, N. Calif. Klamath River ) killed them and rendered the fat oil for lamps and cooking.

It has a distinctly seaweed taste and steak texture, sea steak, if you will. It’s chewy and the taste lingers in your mouth well after the last bite.

So they *are* really greasy?

;D

I’ve heard of whale oil for lamps but not seal.

I learn something new here everyday.

Thanks!
