Richlands, NC ... Police Chief Thomas Bennett was suspended as a law enforcement officer after failing his recent annual firearms qualification exam.
Ironic that Camp Lejeune, home to the best shooters in the world, is only 3-4 miles away from Richlands.

Bennett has been police chief in Richlands, near the Atlantic coast, since 1999 and plans to retire in July.

This seems just 'mean'. Just 3 months left to go before retirment, and as a Police Chief he is neither likely to be in a squad car, nor using his weapon. He's in management, and at the end of his career. This seems just like a public insult, to what otherwise appears to be a good man.

I known several who couldn't stand inside a barn and hit a wall.

There is a retired NYC cop in town who is downright scary.

Guy is retired in July anyway.

He just wanted to get on with it.

One of you could phone the gentleman and offer to teach him to shoot, as a patriotic North Carolinian gesture.

At least they had some requirements for their officers.
Anyone else remember the lard a** that tazered a girl and killed her because he couldn’t chase a handcuffed girl a few feet?

A gun club I belonged to allowed the local PD to use their indoor range for quals, practice whatever. They would never say exactly what the use would be b/c of ‘security’ and made a big fuss that they should be the only ones attending so the range on those days was closed to the membership. All this ended after the 3rd time the club had to make repairs to the building b/c of ‘errant’ rounds (usually thru the roof). In the end the PD travelled across the state to the NG range where they were assured there would be no termination of access. The NG range was outdoor only with nothing around for miles and miles so ‘leaks’ would likely go undetected.

If he had passed tests in the past and, perhaps,he was older (50’s/60’s) it could be a medical thing.Eyesight,perhaps...or neurological.

Dammit, you made me laugh about something I don't laugh about.

I hate it when that happens.

Richlands to the front gate of Camp Lejeune is 30 minutes. I know because my husband makes the drive every day. It’s more with traffic. That being said, most of the Richlands police department are locals. The vast majority of the Marines that go into law enforcement here go with the Sherriff’s department. Richlands is pretty much run by two families.

We figure he pissed someone off. This is an itty bitty hick town. We have lived here 5 years, and there isn’t a heck of a lot of crime here. It’s mostly farmland and woods. Jacksonville’s population has just recently started to creep over here.

Funny you should mention that. Just returned from the range. I was RSO for Markmanship night. One of the participants is a deputy (I won’t divulge county) that is struggling with small bore rifle and admits he can’t shoot pistol.

Kinda makes you wonder!

Pretty sure I can shoot a .22 rifle at a target with my eyes closed and hit center mass every time.
