Parishioners join vicar in protest conversion
Telegraph ^ | 4-12-12

Almost half a congregation has followed a vicar converting to Catholicism, after claiming that the Church of England does not know what it “believes” in any more.

The Rev Donald Minchew left his Anglican church of nearly two decades to join a Catholic church just up the road in Croydon, south London.

The 63-year-old quit six weeks ago because he disagreed with decisions being made by the Church of England, including the ordination of female priests and bishops.

But after he resigned from St Michael's and All Angels parish following 16 and-a-half-years, 70 of his flock decided to join him in an extraordinary leap of faith.

The vicar together with almost half of his previous congregation as well as three new members, were received into the full communion at St Mary's Church earlier this month.

Former Anglican bishop Monsignor John Broadhurst received and confirmed the group, who will now form the Croydon Ordinariate.

"These people are very brave because they have answered the call of God and the indignation of Pope Benedict and done it at a great cost," said the Rev Minchew

"I think the reason they came across during the Ordinariate is because they don't quibble over things like the clergy, but I think there is a great comfort in the Catholic church, you know what you believe and what the church teaches.

"In the Church of England you don't know what the church believes from one synod to the next. What we would have taken for granted for 30 years you can't now, but in the Catholic church it's not changing you know what you are getting into."

Well, if what you say is true, I for one, welcome them all into the Fire, that is, the Fire of Faith that obviously is burning inside of them.

If only that were true. Unfortunately, the average person taught by Rome has a much different view of the “faith” than you. The wife of a friend of mine just went down to buy a St. Joseph statue to bury upside down in the yard of their home. She said she believes this will help sell it. She is a devout Catholic.

Whatever Rome believes itself to be teaching, its constituency is understanding “Catholic faith” as something those trained in the Scriptures recognize as a demonic superstition. Tragic.

No question the group in this thread should have left the Church of England. But, they left one bad group for more of the same...or worse.

Are you familiar with the term, “snake-handler?”

Should I judge Protestantism by these people?

Frying pan to fire.

We can pray that once they recognize the unbiblical beliefs in the Roman Church that they will continue their search and come to know and believe The Gospel. It sure makes sense to flee the fallen Protestant churches.

Please do!

I much rather be associated with Christians that so literally believe the Word of God that they fall into the error of testing God than those who believe Scripture is malleable to their will.

I wish you could see the irony in that statement.

Here goes...

How many “Bible Alone” denominations are there?

Were these thousands of denominations founded by a search for Truth, or by some psychological motivation (Luther’s scrupulosity) or earthly motivation (Henry VIII, countless prosperity gospel preachers).

We even have “Bible Alone” Protestants who reject the Trinity (Oneness Pentecostals).

And of course, they all adhere to the non-Biblical doctrine of “the Bible alone.”

“If he won’t listen to THE church, treat him as a pagan or tax collector.” —Jesus (in the Bible)

Where does the Bible say that the Bible is the sole rule of faith? You are following the non-biblical tradition of a fallible man, Martin Luther.

Jesus teaches us that His Church teaches authoritatively.

“If he won’t listen to THE church, treat him like a pagan or tax collector.” —Jesus

I try to follow His commands.

Absolutely...Biblical protestants who study the Scriptures will tell you that portion of Mark is no more canonical than the story of the woman at the well. Go check for yourself. The snake-handlers are cultists just as those who identify themselves as papists. Neither appear in the Scriptures...both are deadly.

The average Catholic is superstitious and relies upon icons in the home, on the dashboard, around their necks, even in their yards. Go look at the homes, cars & "religious stores". It is paganism at its worst. They name the name of Jesus, then rub the little bellies. Rome is not paying attention to what their parishoners actually believe...or maybe they are.

Agreed. The further these so-called "churches" deviate from the Scriptures, the more they become whitewashed tombs. Run, don't walk. It is just that these guys just moved across the street in the same cemetary.

They haven't gotten to the point where they recognize that Scripture is the rule of the faith. I pray they will one day.

Comparing the number of Catholic totem holders to the tiny number of snake handlers would be nice.

Same thing? Hardly.

Yes, there is the cure...certainly if God allows. Return to the Scriptures, if they ever recognized them to begin with.

True. The cultic snake-handlers at least point to a spurious passage of Scripture to make their case. Inadvertant bad bibliology. Those sporting St. Joe, patron saint of homesellers, however, claim to have heard it from the traditions of the Catholic org.

Another unbiblical, cultic, snake-handling dance of the unsaved. You may bet your sweet bippy I am lax on that junk. We encourage you to swim back over the polluted Tiber to freedom of Christ, alone...if you are permitted.
