Great post.
When people don’t value themselves they need to make displays by covering themselves in things that show value to others.
That’s fantastic! Good for her! :-)
(And, no, Daddys don’t need to know EVERYTHING... lol)
Wow! I live in a small town and the costs are nowhere near that.
Two of my grandchildren went this weekend and the costs were under $500.
Grandson
$100 Tux and shoes
$25 Tickets
$30 Corsage
Granddaughter
$110 Dress-shoes and jewelry she already had.
$25 Boutineer(sp)
$75 Hair, pedicure and manicure
Dinner was at the home of granddaughter’s date. No limo, although they looked into it and decided that it was a waste of money.
My granddaughter is going to another prom this week in the neighboring town and she let her date choose whether she wore the same dress she wore to her prom this year or the one she wore last year, so all she’ll have to buy is a boutineer.
We went to 4 or 5 stores searching for a dress. My daughter is quite modest so finding a nice dress was quite the challenge. Turns out . . . she loved the first dress at the first store which we had them hold a few hours for us while we made the rounds . . . and it was one I picked out. I think when she went in the dressing room with that one, it was with the idea, “OK I’ll try it just to make her happy” LOL. And then a month later when we were shopping for swimsuits . . . guess what . . . she LOVED the one I picked out . . . I nice one piece from Target for 39.99 vs the 100.00 and UP at the department stores. So you can’t paint all teenagers with a broadbrush . . . there are still some nice, modest young ladies out there who have a very bright future. Mine, keeps in shape, works hard at school, school clubs, dances 4 hours a week (ballet, tap, jazz, pointe), marching band, symphonic band and works out far too much in my opinion with Insanity and Chalean Extreme. Wish I had just half her energy.
My parents were probably too poor to have even let us go to prom had we wanted to go . . . at that time it wasn’t “cool” to go.
Now, hang on a minute! It’s not entirely redneck... her dress DOES match the truck! (Or does that make it worse?) ;-)
And they go coonhunting after Homecoming but she does wear a sequined Santa hat for that. We DO have standards around here. :-P
No one posting so far seems to have had a really extravagant prom and yet they still remember the details. I think that’s really neat!
Sounds like a a good kid. Not down on proms or getting all gussied up for a party.
What does gall me is that a family that probably doesn’t pay a dime in income taxes can choose to spend roughly 10% of their income on one night’s worth of self esteem boosting for their kids
Those British papers sure do worry a lot about us. They should send over some money.
Ever hear the song camouflage?

It’s got a lot about Prom in it ;)

Eons ago, my daughter was entering junior high in the 7th grade. Very, very tiny and difficult to find “grown-up” looking clothes to fit her. There was a small specialty store that always had a buy one, get one free when their new fall line came in. So we pretty much bought out their stock of skirts and sweaters in her size. When I said that her father was going to have a fit she responded, “Oh, we’ll just leave them in boxes, put them under the bed and get out one outfit at a time. He’ll never know.” Ladies in the store just laughed - but he never did.
What a bunch of morons. Most schools have dress swaps. There’s also thrift stores or friends to borrow a dress. A couple years ago, I bought lil miss a prom dress at Goodwill for $12. Goodwill had raised their prices from a couple years before that when they were $10 (brand new with mall store tags and was a copy of one from some teen movie). That $10 one she turned around and sold for $20 so all told, her two dresses cost $2.
Yep, and those 47% that don’t pay taxes . . . I mailed off her check to the IRS yesterday for taxes on the little bit she earned for a contract labor she landed for an engineering internship her summer after jr. year in high school. Pretty sad state of affairs that a 17 yr. old can pay her fair share and 47% can’t do the same. Really messed up tax system our elected representatives have going and refuse to fix it.
I went to a High School function for my sons football team last fall, and nearly every young lady at the function was wearing a dress that belong in a night club, not in ANY school event. What blew my mind was their parents were there... HELLO... Mom and Dad.. YOU ARE THE ADULTS.. START ACTING LIKE IT.
Honestly, blew my mind, no way in hell I would have allowed my daughter to leave the house wearing such things, let alone go to a formal school function in them.
$1000 for prom? Sorry sweetie, you want to spend that much to go on a date, earn it yourself.
Dad’s know more than we really want to... often we turn a blind eye. Pick your battles don’t you know.
Mr. b and I were people watching at the mall and it happened to be a school's prom night. Apparently, parading around at the mall was their pre-prom activity. There was one gal who's front was cut all the down to her woo-hoo. As I was trying to pull my jaw off the floor, Mr. b couldn't help blurting out, "Look, she has a ferret!" I just knew we were going to get knifed or worse.
Obligatory photo.
I’ve seen some really great dresses at GOODWILL....if they aren’t buying them there or making them....well...they’ve learned well from their stupid parents!
Whoa, Nellie ....
... Buckwheat had a sex change?
Ever watch My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on TLC? These are some of the gaudiest, most extravagant weddings I’ve ever seen that aren’t from royal families. These people don’t look like they make that much money, but the weddings look like they must cost a small fortune to put on. These take place in Ireland and England.
But back in this country, I have noticed that the more extravagant the wedding, the shorter the marriage lasts.
For my prom in 1966, my dress cost $35 and that was considered a lot of money to us, and I may have spent another $10 to have my hair done. We didn’t have limos, and went to a breakfast sponsored by one of the student’s family after the prom. My daughter had her prom in 1996 and she told me of the plan to have hotel rooms. I put the kabash on that real quick. I was appalled that any parents were going along with this at all. My oldest granddaughter is 12 and I shudder to think what prom night will be like when it’s her turn. I hope my daughter doesn’t buckle under and allow too much.
Have you seen some of the prom dresses on sale nowadays? They look a bit slutty to me. They’re short at the bottom and skimpy at the top. The nuns at our school would have expelled us if we had showed up in dresses looking like that. I realize times have changed, but it’s unfortunate
what they’ve changed to. And of course the prices of the dresses are outrageous. White dresses aren’t the norm anymore for proms. It looks like the brighter and bolder the color, the better.
