The Ripped, Bikini-Clad Reverend [Episcopal Priest Wins Second Place In Ms. State Fair!]

The Ripped, Bikini-Clad Reverend REV. DR. AMY RICHTER April 20, 2012

I stood by the mailbox holding a package that weighed about as much as an apple. Inside, I knew, there was a bikini. I was almost afraid to open it. How could something so small hold such a big risk?

As an Episcopal priest, I am usually more interested in what is going on inside a person than in what shows on the outside. Most days, if I have official duties, I put on my black clergy shirt, my white collar and a suit that looks decent and head out looking like a priest.

Now here I stood with my package, wondering how “priestly” I would look in its contents. The fabric was fire-engine red; a sprinkling of rhinestones along the edge caught the light.

I needed the bikini for the physique competition at the Wisconsin State Fair. I started training the year before. I loved how strong it made me feel. Now I was about to compete in front of hundreds of people.

The competition would be on a Sunday morning, a day I had requested off for “a personal enrichment experience.” I would not know many people in the crowd. No one from church would be there. Men and women would perform poses of “front double biceps,” “side triceps” and “back lat spread,” while at the other end of the exhibit hall, judges would award ribbons for apple pie and pickled beets. This was a wholesome environment; still, I knew I couldn’t share widely what I was doing.

Decades ago my church decided that the ordination of women was a just and morally responsible thing. Some people left over the decision. Some people still tell me they struggle with the idea.

This is a VERY sad thread. How disrespectful so many commenters have been to the humanity of women. We are dimensional, not some background prop. I don’t blame her for having trepedations about revealing her intent to compete and expressing an aspect of her which celebrates her physical health and strength. Look at the sad way so many of you have replied.

Half the people in the world are female. It is wonderful that the Episopal Church has embraced that reality and recognizes that a priest with female experiences can bring a persepctive with which more women can identify and relate. This woman is a role model for anyone trying to combat limitations placed upon them by others in striving to realize their full potential.

Oh my goodness. I do NOT want to see this person in a bikini.

People have really become disordered.

Do you think they were this disordered 100 years ago? I don’t think so. They might have been hungrier and more miserable but I think they were more grounded in reality.

What a sad thread.

Father lady whatever you are, please go away.

The Episcopal Church is a mainline Anglican Church. And where is the Anglican Church located? The UK!

As we all know the UK is leading the West to its destruction so it shouldn’t really surprise us to see this.

“I don’t blame her for having trepedations about revealing her intent to compete and expressing an aspect of her which celebrates her physical health and strength. Look at the sad way so many of you have replied.”

“The women should be dressed quietly, and their demeanour should be modest and serious. The adornment of a Christian woman is not a matter of an elaborate coiffure, expensive clothes or valuable jewellery, but the living of a good life. A woman should learn quietly and humbly. Personally, I don’t allow women to teach, nor do I ever put them into positions of authority over men—I believe their role is to be receptive.” - 1 Tim 2

I guess I’ll go with the Apostle Paul & the Word of God.

FWIW, I would also be appalled at a male pastor taking up bodybuilding, which celebrates appearance and the flesh over health and good deeds.

Hmmm. So his manager is his wife? It hardly seems like a good idea to have a spouse reporting to another spouse.
