Word For The Day, Monday, 4.23.12

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

Flyting; noun

: a dispute or exchange of personal abuse in verse form

Etymology: (Scots: "quarreling," or "contention"), poetic competition of the Scottish makaris (poets) of the 15th and 16th centuries, in which two highly skilled rivals engaged in a contest of verbal abuse, remarkable for its fierceness and extravagance. Although contestants attacked each other spiritedly, they actually had a professional respect for their rival's vocabulary of invective. The tradition seems to have derived from the Gaelic filid (class of professional poets), who composed savage tirades against persons who slighted them. A Scandinavian counterpart is the Lokasenna ("Flyting of Loki"), a poem in the Poetic (Elder) Edda in which the trickster-god Loki bandies words with the other gods, taunting them with coarse jests. Although true flyting became obsolete in Scottish literature after the Middle Ages, the tradition itself never died out among writers of Celtic background. The style and language of Robert Burns's "To a Louse" ("Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner / Detested, shunn'd by saunt an' sinner") parodies earlier Scots flyting, and James Joyce's poem "The Holy Office" is a bard's curse on the society that spurns him.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Hey tech man! Is there a way to change the times to CST from PDT on posts?

It shows PDT as default (since that’s where the FR servers are) unless your local network has a time feature.

So, no. I don’t know how.

(Notice, I didn’t say “just add two hours in your head.”)

I’ll admit to starting to follow him when he declared Al Gore to be dead.

I had to chase down some info for a bid, and it took longer than I anticipated-

Some panicked ‘rats accuse
Obama now of blighting
The orchard of the economy-
And they continue the flyting

Manchin decries Obamacare
Along with others as well-
Being trampled by the voters
Is no doubt a vision of hell

If that wasn’t sufficient,
Others are off the tracks-
The secret service, the GSA-
All are open to dumbass attacks

Maybe I’m having a dumbass attack myself, but why do the parents of T. Martin have an attorney holding court in the media while they wring their hands in every interview as if this is a civil suit? I understand their pain in having lost their son, but why the very vocal attorney at this stage of the proceedings? Isn’t Zimmerman accused of a crime, and being prosecuted by the DA? The parents’ attorney seems to be on TV more than Zimmerman’s attorney is, and he is representing the defendant in a criminal case...

A++++ great job.
And the Martins while genuinely mourning their son, appear to be loving the limelight. It’s unfortunate.
