Moved to Shreveport area for business. (Sorry for vanity) So is this a lib town or Conservative or What? If any freepers are here please give me some scoop. I was listening to 710 am talk and heard this guy called Moon Griffon on a weekday talk show trashing Jindal bad and thought he was a big time lib. Then I catch him again and he sounds like me...big time conservative who is disowning the pubs because they are chicken S..T and no different than the libs. Any suggestions? I don't know a soul in this whole state.
First of all, welcome to Louisiana! You will fall in love with the people and unique culture of the Bayou State.
Secondly, it has become somewhat fashionable to trash Jindal on the radio for some reason. I think he’s doing a pretty good job taking on the teachers’ unions and upsetting the apple cart, so to speak. Shreveport and the I-20 corridor in general is a pretty conservative area. Moon is a pretty solid radio guy but he does say things at times just to be outlandish and controversial.

You will find, however, that many democrats in local and state governments are far more conservative than NE US republicans.
I’m right down the road in Ruston, and used to live in Shreveport, so I know the area. Moon is a personal friend of mine, and he is conservative. But he’s never been a big fan of Jindal’s, as he thinks he isn’t a true conservative.
I agree with Moon, but have to give Jindal his due on the education reforms that are working their way through the legislature.

Thanks. I’m in Insurance but it’s kind of a niche business. But thanks. This is very pretty and so different. I have been living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for 11 years so this is bigtime different. Like it so far but may change my mind come winter. I don’t yet own a coat. lol
On what issues do you believe him not to be conservative enough? I think he does deserve his due on education reform. That will do wonders for this state.
I've met Gov. Jindal and talked to him one-on-one several times. It always strikes me how much attention he pays to what a person has to say and how he will quickly admit that he doesn't know the answer to a question if he doesn't. He will darn sure find out and get back with you though. That means a lot to me that he is not your typical politician.

I can’t imagine that Louisiana is dominated by “liberals” (but then again, this ain’t my daddy’s America anymore). The “Napoleonic Code” is a bit foreign to me, but I’ve always found folks from LA are good people. I’ve gone to LA several times on business.
If I had to move, LA would be one of those states that would be acceptable to me.

Immediately after he took office in 2008 - and this is all documented right here on FRee Republic - Jindal did three “non-conservative” things.
He busted the state spending cap and increased state spending about a billion dollars.

He then opposed the rollback of the Stelly Tax and then supported a legislative pay raise until he got his brains beat out on the issue.
All that happened within his first six months in office.
For the past couple of years, he’s been more fiscally conservative that he was at first.
But I still don’t trust him, not a bit. He’s a politician, and he would change his spots in an instant, if he thought that’s the way the wind was blowing.

I see that others have already given you welcome and good advice. I no longer live in Louisiana, but have to say it is one of my favorite states, although I much prefer Southern Louisiana to Northern Louisiana. That distinction is your first compass point difference, as the demographics are very different.
South Louisiana is VERY Catholic, and the population is a mix which is heavy with French, Spanish, Italian and Irish, especially as you approach Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Lafayette is sort of the heart of Cajun country. Delightful people, with big hearts, open arms, and a cuisine that will make you fall on your knees and give thanks to God for giving us such great things to eat. Off the wall fun music too, in several different flavors. You’ll see.
North Louisiana is largely ‘Kaintuck’, and is more of an extention of the Southern Bible Belt. Protestant, much more Scoth Irish, and closer to what you would find in East Texas than South Louisiana. Not quite as fun loving and relaxed IMO, but still great people and good neighbors as you will soon find.
Shreveport. Well. It is my least favorite city in Louisiana. Areas are dangerous, and it is not attractive to me, but that is personal assessment. That said, a LOT of money goes through that place, and should offer you some opportunity.
Perhaps if you gave a hint of your skills or profession someone can Freepmail you with some ideas. It is not my bailiwick, so I can’t.
Make some day trips. Louisiana is one of the most historically fascinating and complex states in the present Union. Deal with Louisianans in an honest and open manner as peers and they will do the same to you. You have landed on your feet, IMO.
Jindal you will have to make up your own mind about. In my opinion he is not as strong as his boosters would say, or as poor as his detractors say. He is not an impressive leader in my book. He IS a staggeringly competent, smart and effective support to a strong leader. He is a force multiplier for any focused and strong willed executive, but not one in his own right. Again, that is my personal opionion.
Jindal got his start as a protege of Governor Mike Foster, may God bless the man and send many ducks in his direction. Governor Foster came from Shreveport, by the way. One of the few candidates I have never regretted supporting and voting for.

The Code Napoleon is foreign to Louisiana as well. The basis of civil law in Louisiana is the Code Civil of 1808, and subsequent iterations of the Civil Code. Fun topic, reaching back to Louis XIV and the Roman Republic. Sadly contaminated by Anglo-American common law influences and decadent juridical moles operating out of an effete, arrogant and decadent law school in New Orleans. I am half joking about decadent juridical moles. Well, maybe 27% joking.

All that said about Jindal, I still voted for him last year, as I did in 2007. And you are quite correct about his pro-life and pro-family stance, which I think he’s quite sincere about.
But if you were to rate him on a conservatism scale of 1 to 10, with Ronald Reagan approaching a 10, Mittens a 2.2, George Bush a 4.5, Newt a 6.9, Perry a 5.7, Vitter a 9.0, I would rate Jindal a 6 or 7.
That’s just my opinion, though.
