DELAWARE TWP. — The device that exploded this morning, seriously injuring a 73-year-old man, was a 20 mm artillery shell.

That’s the word from Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III.

He said that John Grimm III was in his garage working on a project involving two artillery shells, possibly making a lamp.

He successfully drilled the necessary holes in one shell, but when he was drilling the second shell, it exploded, sending shrapnel into his arms, chest and groin, Kearns said.

He believes the shells were of World War II vintage.

Some of the early model WWII tanks had 20 MM mounted on them. I believe that the German MK II had a 20 MM. It was the front line Tank for the Wehrmacht during the invasion of France, later to be replaced by the Mk III and Mk IV in 1940 and 1941. The Mk III had a 50 MM and the M IV had a 75 MM. The Mark IV was their best tank but the MK III was produced in greater numbers and was considered their main battle tank until the Panther and Tiger were produced late in the war. The main reason our M4 Sherman was so under gunned and thinly armored was because the early German tanks were not very heavily armed and in Africa the Sherman was a match for the Mk IV. It wasn’t until after D Day when we started running into the Panthers and Tigers did the inadequacy of the Sherman manifest itself.
