Donna Summer -- the Queen of Disco -- died this morning after a battle with cancer ... TMZ has learned.
We're told Summer was in Florida at the time of her death. She was 63 years old.
Sources close to Summer tell us ... the singer was trying to keep the extent of her illness under wraps. We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago ... who says she didn't seem too bad.
In fact, we're told she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on.
Summer was a 5-time Grammy winner who shot to superstardom in the '70s with iconic hits like "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls."
A sad day. No longer will she have to Work hard for the money.
Oh terriable too many memories gone. RIP
I understood that she had become a "born-again chrstian" at some point. Unfortunately, I also read that she was supporting "gay rights." Does not compute.
At any rate, we've lost another icon of the 1970's--the absolute pinnacle of human civilization.
makes you feel old, doesn’t it?
His judgment cometh and that right soon
Holy crap, I didn’t even know she was sick.
I’m sick and tired of our contemporaries dying.
I thought the gays were upset with her because she had said homosexuality was wrong.
Gloria Gaynor is still alive.
I remember Rollar skating to Bad girl in late 1970s
Oh no! I loved her. She sang some very risque songs, but she became a Christian and wouldn’t perform her hits for many years. That was when she became more serious as a musician. I saw her in Reno a couple of years ago and it was a good show.
Yes, but Andrea True is dead.
Except for KC, I hated disco at the time. But I love it now. Thanks Donna!
Flashback to my part time job in college working in a disco as a bouncer/bartender starting to make me feel real mortal.
FYI. Of interest.
Gloria Gaynor sang this song - not Donna.
Yeah. They should stop.
She had much more impact than Whitney Houston.
RIP Ms Summers. Not a great fan of disco, but I did enjoy your songs. Feeling older by the day. :(
Add her to the long list of great black performers who died way before their time, whether as a result of their own recklessness or natural causes.
That is sad
One thing I remember is you never heard scandal about her
she just did her craft and stayed out of the news
Couldn't come close to her voice-wise.
Exactly. Not one single scandal about her.
She starred in the the African-American version of “Saturday Night Fever”, which was “Thank God It’s Friday”, in 1978.
Very good movie...
“She starred in the the African-American version of Saturday Night Fever, which was Thank God Its Friday, in 1978.”
Jeff Goldblum was a hoot in that movie.
Heard it on the radio.
Jeff Goldblum is African-American? Who Knew?
It really wasn’t an African American version. It was a movie that was set in a disco one night, and was about the experiences of several characters in the course of the evening. Goldblum played the club’s owner.
I mean it wasn’t like “The Wiz”
....world record for longest note held by a female singer in a hit Pop song, which is held by Donna Summer in “Dim All The Lights”.
What a sad week for disco.....First Tony Menaro likes boys and Donna Summer passes away....RIP....Will always love her music and keep her albums....
Who is Tony Menaro??
Al Pacino, Al Pacino, Al Pacino!
Up your nose with Rubah Hoses!
“I mean it wasnt like The Wiz”
Don’t know. I never saw “the Wiz.”
There was a lot of terrible disco made back in the ‘70s, but Donna Summer was one of the few good acts in that genre. RIP.
And as bad as it was, at least it was made with real musicians playing actual instruments unlike most dance music of today.
Tony Menaro = John Travolta
Tony Montana = Al Pacino
Terrible Disco????? Well I didn’t think so but here are some classic’s that we loved back then.....
“Disco makes me violently ill.”
I used to feel that way, but the (rap) crap that’s out now makes me see how relatively innocent it was. It’s not “Your Hit Parade” level of innocence, but nothing compared to the absolutely mindless stuff of today.
Check the one minute mark for the reference. ;)
In “Saturday Night Fever”, Tony Menaro is in front of a mirror going “Al Pacino” then chanting “Attica....Attica...Attica”, like Pacino’s gay character in “Dog Day Afternoon”......Maybe John was trying to tell us something back then.
Thanks for clearing that up!
(I had forgotten about that scene — Travolta was so cute and slender back then!)
About twenty minutes ago Rush mentioned her passing. He relayed the time he met Gloria and her husband on a plane when she came up to Rush and introduced herself and then proceeded to tell him they were one of us, conservatives......
who on the plane — Gloria Gaynor or Donna Summer?
