Donna Summer dead at 63

Her family released a statement Thursday saying Summer had died and that they "are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy."'

TMZ first reported the news, noting Summer had died in Florida on Thursday after a long battle with cancer. Insiders told TMZ she was recently working on music for a new album.

Known as the "Queen of Disco," Summer was born in Boston, Mass. in 1948, as one of seven children.

The five-time Grammy winner rose to fame in the 1970s, scoring hits with "Last Dance," "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls."

She co-wrote the single "Love to Love You Baby" in 1975, and went on to co-write several other hits, including "She Works Hard For Her Money."

Summer appeared in the 1978 film, "Thank God It's Friday," which took home the best original song Oscar for "Last Dance."

Summer married Brooklyn Dreams vocalist Bruce Sudano in 1980. She is survived by her husband, three daughters and four grandchildren.

That’s good to read. And not too surprising. Her being a preacher’s daughter, someone who truly did work hard for her money, and someone who didn’t feel the need to spew left wing political spiel in the press, this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

LOL, I agree, basically.

I sort of like the music (though the long version - no thanks), but the THEME is my problem. Don’t need all this sexy stuff in mainstream. Now it’s completely out of control, a`la “Idiocracy”.

Luckily, as a child I was isolated from that risque stuff; I guess our radio stations were more conservative then and wouldn’t play it as it’s been noted some didn’t. I knew all the other following hits, though!

Sad to hear of Donna Summer's passing. It was perhaps a misfortune that she became a star at the height of the disco craze because I believe her sheer talent would have ensured her of a long string of hits had she not been lumped in with the disco movement.

Donna became a born-again Christian and continued to make good music well into the 2000s. In 1994, Donna recorded what is one of my favorite Christmas albums of all time - Christmas Spirit. Not even a hint of her disco roots. Her vocal performance on this album is right up there with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey in their prime.

I know it is out of season but I highly recommend you bookmark this album for download when Christmas comes around again. You will not be disappointed.

I remember being the first music I listened to as a youngster in the early 80s, what did I know, I was 6 years old and I liked the upbeat tempo more than the lyrics. Rest in Peace Donna.

I remember having to dance to her version of ‘MacArthur Park’ in high school dance class. So, at the news, my first thought was that “someone left her cake out in the rain.” Confusing song, but she did have a remarkable voice.
