The variant I always wonder about is this:

What would have happened if Japan had attacked the Soviet Union instead of the United States?

The only thing standing in the way of the Germans taking Moscow in December 1941 was Zhukov's Siberian troops.

Now that is an interesting scenario. Another interesting scenario is the activities of Richard Sorge on whom Stalin depended to find out the Japanese intentions. As soon as Sorge convinced Stalin that Japan was not going to attack the USSR those troops started boarding trains to their Western front.
