Couple problems with the Sprint. First, the testing standards were different, and it would probably get more like 37/42 today.

Second, you could ball one up in your hands like a sheet of newspaper. Even little cars today have to meet much more strict crash standards, which leads to lower economy numbers.

When I lived in Japan the Japanese had these little cars they drove which were not allowed on expressways or major highways. These cars had an A at the beginning of their licenses plate and the car owners paid a lower road tax. These cars would probably crumple like a tin can but they were only met for low speed roads.

I doubt something like this would work in this Country.
