The future USS Minnesota (SSN-783) will be the 10th of a projected 30 Virginia-class submarines. She will be the third United States Navy ship named for the state of Minnesota. The contract to build her was awarded to the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia on 14 August 2003. Construction of PCU Minnesota (SSN-783) began in February, 2008. The ship was named on July 15, 2008 and is expected to be delivered in 2013. The selection of Minnesota, designated SSN 783, honors the state's citizens and their continued support to our nation's military. Minnesota has a long tradition of honoring its veterans of wars past and present.

It only takes 18 months to build the Block II and III Virginia class boats. The Block I boats took 33 months to build. It took 6 years to build the Seawolf class boats.

With the speed of Virginia class construction, we should be able to maintain 55+ SSNs.

Wow, how practical are these HK attack boats considering our enemies militaries are fighting us using asymmetrical warfare and IED’s?

Many of our enemies, and future enemies (China), are developing submarine warfare capabilities as fast as they can.

BTW, US submarines are quite capable of asymmetrical warfare.

The Russians plan to commission 10 Yasen class SSNs over the next 10 years. The British plan to commission 7 Astute class SSNs over the next 15 years. The French plan to commission 6 Barracuda class SSNs over the next 20 years. The Chinese are developing their submarine capabilities with new Yuan class SSKs and Shang class SSNs. We already have 9 Virginia class SSNs in commission and are building more.

We must keep the most largest and most advanced submarine force in the world.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation to me. Are those new diesel boats as quiet and as impossible to detect? Perhaps, we need a squadron of those boats to ambush our new friends, on their turf! What do they call those very capable boats.
