Vanity: Who can recommend a timer-based program to Limit Firefox?

I want to find some software that will let me shut down internet access to my daughter's bedroom computer between eleven PM and eight AM, so she will get more sleep. Can anyone recommend software that will do this?

I can’t believe the number of posters suggesting ways to configure your router to do this. Sure, that’s fine if she can’t connect to four or five of your neighbors’ wireless routers instead.

Does she own a "smartphone?"
Is the computer a desktop or laptop?
The only way I can think of is intercept the cable to her room from the main electrical box, and install a lockable box nearby where you can install a timer. She can have a battery-powered nightlight.

Me?
If it is coming to this, she wouldn't own a computer.

1. Get the computer out of the bedroom.
2. You can limit the time of use via configuring wireless router or unplug the router as others have said, but her lack of rule-following is becoming your headache. is that fair? so ...
3. Tell her the rules, expect her to follow them, and show her that violations will cause her to lose her computer and you dont want it to come to this:

k9webprotection.com - It has all kinds of parental controls including access schedules. And it’s free.

Forget it. Let her learn how to function on minimal sleep. That’s the best advice for kids now.

Multitask away !
(and go to pharmacy school)

I’m with the others who have said no computers in the bedroom.

If you are using a wireless router, just put a Electric Timer on it.

Assuming there is a router, it would have to be in an enclosed, lockable area. Kids are smarter than you think. If they can get to it, they (or their friends) can circumvent the no router issue. Heck, they can make arrangements with a neighbor!

Plus, you don't want the parents to also have curfews.

Pay a computer geek to write a program that will erase her hard drive if she accesses the computer during those hours. Attach the program to a photo of some cute puppies and send it to her email. Then tell her if she gets on the computer after 11, something bad will happen. If she disobeys you, she will learn a real life lesson - ALWAYS LISTEN TO DAD!

I’ve installed netnanny on several clients’ PCs and was quite impressed. It has timer options as well as blocks site access based on criteria you configure. It operates at a low access level, so it works for all browsers, chat programs etc. It has good reporting too, showing what your child is up to and how many attempts were made to access forbidden sites. It also has an override function where you can grant access on a per-request basis from your child. And much more.

There’s a small annual fee to keep the service active, but only a paid service can afford to keep the block lists up to date as well as provide fast proxy service.

I highly recommend it, and don’t think there’s really anything else out there that is even remotely comparable in terms of functionality, effectiveness, and robustness of operation.

I just disconnect the mouses (mice?) on our desktop computers and hide them. I’m not a techie, but this works fine.

take the fuse out of the box.

Most teenagers know more about computers than we do, so trying a lockout might not work, but few know how to change a fuse

You talk about teaching boys to use guns but ask for help in restricting your daughters use of the computer.

Your home, your rules, if not, software won't help.

I love this suggestion.!
If she wants to use the computer again, SHE will have to deal with loading it with a new OS, any way she can, (at her expense, of course.)

I've used Netnanny for my kids and have been very happy with it; I have a 3 user license that is $39.99 per year.

It might be overkill for you however.

Good luck!

Ummm...my daughter has Attention Deficit Disorder, and needs to stop watching Youtube and go to bed so she can get a good night's sleep. It's called "parenting".
