ROOKERY BIRDS
self | June 10, 2012 | swampsniper

More from my Easter Day shoot.

The Roseate Spoonbills have gone from scarce to fairly common in recent years. This one was gathering Red cedar for nest material.

The little Snowy Egret was very carefully checking out eggs.

I've got surgery set for the 19th, I can hardly wait.

With my right eye working 100% the left eye is an obvious drag.

I took the right lens out of my glasses but things are still unbalanced.

Thank you for this gift of beauty, Swampy. The blush colored bird is my favorite. Are the eyes a pinkish red as well? Such a beautiful color. Hugs, Mom

Red eyes are standard equipment on some birds, with others the eyes change color in breeding season. It’s a deep ruby red, really intense.

The bird is just beautiful. I have to laugh because I showed the picture to my six year old. She swears the bird is getting a sunburn. LOL!!

They get the pink color from iodine in the crustaceans they eat, same as Flamingos. On a poor diet they fade to white.

The Spoonbills and Flamingos feed by straining small crustaceans out of the mud. The beaks are highly specialized for it.

Went through the same surgery on my right eye two months ago.

I waiting too long after the detachment for surgery, and I didn't do a great job of staying on my belly during recovery.

I ended up buying a massage chair to sit in and do computer work. Well worth it.

Improvements are slow but continuous. Stay on your belly. Sleep a lot. Take care of yourself.
