Michaela McCowen says she was sitting inside her house Thursday morning when she heard two gunshots in the yard. When she ran outside, she saw her dog lying in a pool of blood.
"She's on the ground and she's been shot and she's bleeding," said McCowen while standing outside her home in Athens, LA.
McCowen's 6-year old Golden Retriever, Tera, later died. She was shot twice by a Claiborne sheriff's detective.
"He saw the dog coming at him full speed, and showing his teeth. He told me he thought he was fixing to bite him," said Claiborne Sheriff Ken Bailey.
Sheriff Bailey says authorities were tracking some men who'd just tried to rob the bank in Athens when the shooting happened. Bailey says the detective felt threatened by the dog. McCowen says Tera, who was wearing a shock collar at the time, wouldn't have hurt a flea.
"She was so well-trained to stay inside of her area. She knew if she left her area for anything, she was getting shocked," said McCowen.
McCowen says what made the heartbreaking situation even worse is authorities showed no remorse. The sheriff says he couldn't be more sorry.
"I told the McCowens and I apologized for what happened, It's just an unfortunate incident. I hate it," said Bailey.
The sheriff says the shooting is being investigated. Michaela McCowen says she'd like to see more training when it comes to handling animals.
The problem is not lack of training.
The problem is that he *has* been trained---to shoot any dog on site, without discretion. *That* is why he felt no remorse--because he has been trained to believe there is no *reason* to feel remorse about wronging an American citizen.

I have two chocolate labs and a saint bernard. We walk by a house that has a goldie with an invisible fence. That crazy dog sprints towards you like a silent missile and then barks like crazy when it nears it’s fence line.
My dogs want nothing to do with that nutter. Scared the bejeesus out of me the first time it did that.

I wonder what the distance was - sounds like it could have been quite a bit. These effing pussy cops just make me sick. “Feeling threatened” just doesn’t cut it unless at a very minimum the animal is so close that there will be no time to react if it really should attempt to attack.
I wonder what the ratio of armed citizens is to armed cops. I’ve read exactly one incident of someone with a CCW permit shooting a dog, and that I think was a pit bull. I do remember he was riding a bike on a bicycle path and the dog appeared about ready to take a bite out him.
That says a lot to me and makes me recall my cop friends with their ‘amusing’ nickname for the SWAT team. Puppy Killers.

I've seen a Golden showing all those big teeth. It's frightening if you're wearing nice clothes and don't want a dog to shed or slobber on you. Other than those threats, it's hard to imagine a Golden Retriever harming anyone. There's a reason the police and military don't use them as attack dogs.

Why do cops shoot dogs?
Because they can.
What I mean to say is, because there’s no penalty for doing so. It’s a free shot.
Dogs didn’t used to be shot so much. I think cops recognized that the dog was a pet and someone’s property and they respected that. Plus, they didn’t want to cause grief by shooting someone’s dog. But it seems that none of that matters any longer. The Us vs Them mentality has become the norm. F the stupid dog. F the people this stupid dog belongs to. And, to a lesser extent, F anybody who is in my way.
What if there were a real penalty that would immediately affect them? How about a policy instituted by a city or county - for every dog you shoot you will lose 1/4 or maybe 1/3 of your next paycheck after taxes. Now, if they really think their life is in danger they will gladly pull the trigger. But if a dog is just ‘in their way’ they will have to decide - Do I really want to lose a chunk of my hard earned money for shooting this dog? Is there another way to handle this?
Oh, and macing a dog would be free.

I wasn’t an accident. It was standard police thug policy.
The more training refers to killing a dog with one shot not multiple shots.
If I saw a cop killing my dog, I’d have to assume that he would shoot me just as easily and without any more consideration than the dog.
How is it the post office doesn’t need to shoot every dog they come across?
They certainly come into more dog contact than the police.

I’ve been to alot of houses on duty. I don’t know how many times I’ve been told, just before the dog comes at me, “My dog doesn’t bite” but it’s alot. I’ve had them biting at my lower leg, getting ahold of my pants and biting my shoe after I put my foot up to ward them off.
Most homeowners didn’t even apologize. And they invited me into their homes.
Of course, those kinds of stories don’t make it here on FR. I won’t even try to deny that there are alot of police shooting dogs that shouldn’t have.
I’ve shot alot of dogs, the vast majority are pit bulls that irresponsible owners have just turned loose and are going after people.
I’ve seen several kids with their faces ripped to shreds with terrible gaping wounds from dog bites.
There are also stories the other way around. One of our guys had his arm broken by a rottweiler bite. He didn’t shoot the dog. And that was at a house they were shutting down for narcotics sales. Several other officers on my dept. have been bitten and not shot the animal.
Oh well, it is what it is.
“Feeling threatened” is the formula for using profitably the opportunity to shoot a dog or a person. Saying those words renders a shooting by police “justified” and “necessary” and “unavoidable.” Every home with a yard should keep a dog and the owner should learn o invest no emotion in the dog. The dog is there to give police something to shoot should they come to your house for any reason. They get to shoot some living creature for practice. The preferred creature is a dog but another will do in the absence of a canine.
You know it’s going to happen.
Of these stories we read week after week here on FR of cops shooting dogs, I cannot remember a single one concerning dogs 'turned loose'. And almost none of incidents where the owner 'invited me into their homes.'
For the most part, the shooters were on private property where they were not invited, not welcome, and not expected. One of these incidents is going to end in a bigger tragedy than a dog getting killed.
