I had the pleasure of having a veteran homicide detective give me the inside scoop on a 40 year old cold case he was investigating once. In that case, they didn’t even know the identity of the victim at first, they had found the skeletal remains of a child buried between two apartment buildings decades before. It took the guy about an hour to tell the tale of how they went about finding out who the child was and finding the surviving family members and little by little piecing together the unfortunate story. It was a fascinating look into how these bloodhounds can pick up a scent and just never give up.

I may have plenty of unkind words for some of the thuggish cop tactics nowadays, but guys like that detective, and the one in this story, are pretty damn cool in my book.
