We’ve lived in Kennesaw for 20 years. When people ask me if we own guns, I tell them I’ll leave my front window open that night. They can crawl in that window at 3:00 am. Then they’ll find out if I own a gun.
I had applied for a job in the Atlanta area, and checked out crime stats. Most striking was the very incidence of rape.
Chicago’s draconian gun control laws seem to have little effect on the criminal class, imagine that. It is still gleefully shooting and killing on a daily basis mostly banger on banger, fortunately. While the City Fathers and Der Fuehrer ruefully wring their hands and wonder what to do.
I lived in Kennesaw (northern Cobb County) for several years in the early 2000’s. It was a nice place live. We later moved to Woodstock, GA (southern Cherokee County) and spent about 5 years there. An equally nice, safe place to live. I an see the undercurrent in this article, and there is a whiff of mockery, treating the residents of Kennesaw as gun-totin’ rednecks. That characterization doesn’t fly with anyone who has spent enough time there to understand the area. My impression of violent crime in both Kennesaw and Woodstock was that, if you subtracted out the crimes committed by or between illegal aliens, you reduced the overall crime rate significantly. And that is a reduction from a fairly low overall level. The Metro Atlanta area is vast - comprising more than 25 counties, more than 5.2M people (in the 2010 census) and numerous cities and towns. The crime issue is significant in certain localized pockets of the metro area, and it is a tricky thing to isolate. It is not a single crime plagued central area (though the city of Atlanta is relatively bad) with relative safety increasing at greater distances from the central core. When asked by friend how to identify and avoid the dangerous areas of Atlanta, I have responded that the dangerous areas are a little like taking a paintbrush and flecking paint over a map of Atlanta and the surrounding counties. There are pockets that are quite dangerous, and it took some time living in the area to learn what to avoid.
