Word For The Day, Thursday, June 28, 2012 - subitize
dictionaries ad nauseam | 28 June 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 06/28/2012 4:41:50 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

subitize \SOO-bi-tahyz\, verb
To perceive at a glance the number of items presented.

Example sentences:
Below seven the subjects were said to subitize; above seven they were said to estimate.
-- H. Gutfreund and G. Toulouse, Biology and Computation: A Physicist's Choice

I wanted to see if Pedro could subitize, so I asked, “Pedro, how many stars are in the first circle?”
-- Melissa Conklin, It Makes Sense!

Etymology:
Subitize comes from the Latin word subitāre which meant "to appear suddenly".

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

you are so very right about the stakes this fall and the makeup of the Court magnifying those. it infuriates me to see the dimwits on FR who do not get or care about that and continue to trash the nominee. Here's the link that Ti gave out the other day for the ruling. Log in and it updates automatically. FR is going to be too onerous to navigate pretty soon.

I went down to the dungeon workout room in air conditioned comfort and used my tortuous elliptical machine and watched and episode of The Mentalist. 1st workout of the day complete. I will swim this afternoon and walk my hill tonight. I am feeling pretty smug and fit these days. Hope your run was fun.

So when you have a Million Man March, or a Workers Unite protest in DC, or one of those other Liberal Marches, the Media will subitize the count and the results are just a tad* inflated.

.

.

*tad = anywhere from 37,000 to 480,000

There was one last night who said that Texas and other SW states should petition the gov’t to let them join Mexico (since that seems to be federal policy anyway), then fight Mexico for independence.

There is no rationality here many times.

Roberts has betrayed us. This is worse than losing. We are now taxed into some freaky socialized medicine plan. We still don’t even know what we have.

Maybe not fun, doing 5+ miles in the heat, but I saw the doe with her twin fawns in the river next to the trail, about 12 feet from me so that was cool. Then I walked the dogs when I came back and watered the garden to prep it for triple digits today.

We had an apt. fire in Nashville this week that affected 18 units. They said it could have displaced 36-100 people, not sure how many. Why not 18 as a start? And up to 100? Are you kidding me? Math is hard... A for you.

I really want to know because we are definitely opting out. Should we change the name of debtor prisons to Liberty Lounges?

Roberts was concerned with his legacy, wanted to appear non-partisan. shame on him. I don’t know, Obamacare was hugely unpopular. People WANTED it gone. This may mitigate against his reelection chances, bc he succeeded at something the people HATE. Also, the Admin said it wasn’t a tax, and lo and behold, it is. He said he wouldn’t raise taxes, well he just did. Romney’s mantra has been REPEAL AND REPLACE, i imagine he’s reiterating that right now if he hasn’t already. the election is of paramount importance. those who will stay home bc of their distaste for a RINO mormon better rethink their intransigence for the sake of their country.

I am serious that it is a question and no one knows the answer yet. That was the first thing xshub said to me after the decision— what will they do with those who opt out. he also noted the fact that Kagan’s fat lesboic butt clearly leaked this bc Pelosi predicted this exact outcome last night and it was hardly a popularly conceived alternative that anyone else mentioned.

who asked about the commerce clause? This from Scotusblog:

The rejection of the Commerce Clause and Nec. and Proper Clause should be understood as a major blow to Congress's authority to pass social welfare laws. Using the tax code -- especially in the current political environment -- to promote social welfare is going to be a very chancy proposition.

and Scotusblog also points out the incongruity of it NOT being a tax for purposes of the AntiInjunction Act [considering is such for AIA would have meant they did not have jurisdiction to consider it bc there would be no harm as no tax has yet been collected] but it IS a tax for purposes of upholding constitutionality.
