The image of the night in Warsaw on Thursday wasnt Mario Balotelli ripping off his shirt and, despite his best efforts, failing to keep an ice-cool straight face after he scored the goal of the tournament to take Italy into the final of Euro 2012. It was following the referees final whistle. And it involved Balotelli again of course as he buried himself deep into the hug of his adoptive mother, Silvia, her face creased in emotion as he whispered that the two goals to defeat Germany were dedicated to her.

A ‘mayfly’ would be someone who wears padded armour and a helmet to play rugby.

It was not the goal of the tournament. There were at least 10 better goals. His goals against Germany were results of very poor defense.
The irony of this is that the rugby players without helmets and padding are a good deal less likely to incur permanent injury, particularly of the neurological variety, than the helmeted and armored US football players.
