The Strange Story of Curtis Lee: Wife of veteran with Alzheimer's searches for his real lineage
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser / Stars and Stripes ^ | June 24, 2012 | Dan Nakaso

Curtis Lee was in a fog in an Illinois care facility in March, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, when he looked over at his wife of 51 years and suddenly announced that he was somebody else.

"He said, ‘My name is Choy,'" said his wife, Violet Lee. "I said, ‘Does Mr. Choy have a first name?' and he said, ‘Paul.' I said, ‘Well, then who is Curtis Lee?' He just smiled and went off to La-La Land."

The question of who is Curtis Lee and who is Paul Choy now haunts Violet Lee, 71, who believes her husband was born in Honolulu to a prominent family and attended Punahou School, but has been living under an assumed identity for at least half a century.

His nursing home revelation on March 7 that he was actually someone named Paul Choy provided validation, of sorts, for Violet Lee.

Well he wasn’t Obama’s real dad. He was already on the mainland by 1960.

Would a good detective or laywer rule out anything without substantive proof?

From the article:

“He never had a driver’s license or birth certificate that she knew of,hated to be photographed and rarely held a steady job as the couple moved around the country.

After 1998,Curtis Lee never got on an airplane and never had to show identification.”

Sounds like he indeed was connected with military intelligence.... and somehow avoided the increasing paper trail as time went on.

(but how to exist without a birth certificate or ID, by 1998 you needed it for MANY things....... )

It is almost like having no paper trail ending up in the White House. It could never happen.

I had an uncle that died in 1998. He never had a birth certificate.

Meatloaf,
That jogs my memory, my granny was born on a farm in 1898 and all she had was a baptism certificate. She never learned how to drive, and fortunately when she married my grandpa they moved to a city with excellent public transport.
Anything that needed proof of age they would accept that document.
It was almost 11 by 17 heavy paper with ornate writing and bordering.
I guess she predated the strict ID requirements for bank accounts and so forth. But she was traditional and a lot of things were done in conjunction with her husband.

I guess Mr. Lee/Choy was able to thread the needle regarding ID requirements ..probably the last generation to be able to do that.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Chin Ho Kelly in La Jolla/San Diego for a case, with the dialog spelled and pronounced phonetically.
“Steve, I am in Lay Jawlaw...”
“No, Chin Ho, that's La Hoya...”

What a great show. Kam Fong, what a class act!

This is an interesting link about a missing plane from Hawaii in the 1930’s. One of the comments is from a fellow trying to locate “Paul Choy”.
