ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- A 73-year-old woman who was fired from a Walmart store after decades as a greeter said she was amazed at the outpouring of support she received from strangers.
Jan Sullivan, who worked for Walmart for nearly 23 years, most recently at the Tyrone Boulevard location in St. Petersburg, said she was shocked when a Sunday story in the Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times about her firing resulted in hundreds of responses, including offers of money and housing, the Tampa Bay Times reported Friday.
"I'm overwhelmed," she said. "I didn't think people could care that much, you know?"
Sullivan was fired three days after grabbing the sweater of an angry Black Friday shopper who attempted to shove her out of the way and exit through an entrance door.
"Based on the information we have, the situation led to a bad experience for our customer and it could have been avoided. We had to make a tough decision -- one that we don't take lightly," Walmart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie said. "We understand this is a difficult situation, and we're glad Ms. Sullivan will be able to move forward. We wish her the best."
Sullivan said her "misconduct" firing made her ineligible for unemployment and she was forced to sell her home and move into a trailer when she was unable to find a new job.
Amy Wetherbee, a former neighbor of Sullivan's who is helping her sort through the offers of support, said the response to her story has dramatically improved the senior citizen's mood.
“Walmart was like my home,” she says. “Like my family.”
And it wasn't a bad experience for the 73 year old who was shoved aside by the customer? She probably grabbed the shover's sweater to keep her balance so she wouldn't be knocked over. The customer should have been charged with assault. The charging bull gets away, and the poor old lady trying to protect herself from injury gets punished.
Yes, my racism IS showing
Got to go Walmots credit, they know whose arse to kiss, the shoplifting holders people spending our money like its free.
“Based on the information we have, the situation led to a bad experience for our customer and it could have been avoided. “

I thought about this that why would it be a bad experience for this shopper when the shopper was the one who acted like an ass, shoving everyone to exit thru the entrance door? I hope this shopper falls head first into a vat of dog poo.
Hello? Governor Scott?
Boo hoo, these sob stories on these oppressed Walmart workers are propaganda. If they wanted more leverage, they should have done something of themselves to NOT be Walmart workers.
It is like expecting to be your own boss while being a freaking greeter at the cheapest cost leader in the universe!
Well, I guess what they are saying is that if it’s a dispute between the customer and their employee, they take the view that “The customer is always right.”
In truth, though, I bet that the main reason they did it is that they did not want to get sued.
JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON!
That's just plain 'ol bullsh*t, Ashley...pure and simple.
Let me guess, ..., UPI will next suggest, if Walmart was union, she wouldn’t have been fired.
since when do Wal-mart stores have dedicated (and enforced) entrance and exit doors?
I too am a victim. Please send money.
I know some Wal-Mart greeters. Some were fired for no reason. You wouldn't be so glib if it were you.
